CHAPPELL – The Creek Valley Storm placed four individual golfers in the top five at the MAC Golf Tournament at Chappell Golf Club on Thursday as it won the tournament by a comfortable margin over runner-up South Platte.
Unfortunately, Creek Valley and South Platte were the only two teams that were able to field a full team of at least four golfers. The Storm's winning total was 394 with South Platte taking 426.
"It was kind of disappointing to have just the two teams with a full compliment of players, but we're happy with the win anyway," said Storm head coach Cyd Hanson.
In the individual competition, Bayard's Manny Acosta won with a 94, while the next four individuals were all from Creek Valley. Joe Van Winkle led the way with a 96, with Brett Godfrey coming in at 97, Austin Rowley at 99 and Wyatt McMillen with a 102. Ben Cabela finished in ninth with a 106.
"I think most or all of the kids who had a bad front nine improved significantly on the back," said Hanson. "It was nice to see that that they kept grinding away to put up the best score they could."
Godfrey improved his back-nine score by seven strokes while Rowley was 10 better. Cabala, who has struggled of late, brought his score down significantly from recent matches.
"We talked about eliminating those big numbers which was really hurting Ben," Hasnon said. "He did a good job of avoiding those kind of holes and his putting was much better."
Creek Valley is back on the Chappell Golf Club course on Tuesday when it hosts the Storm Invite. The players are scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.
