Sidney golfers take 2nd at home

Dvorak, Dormann pace Red Raiders in Hillside quad

Exactly two weeks before the Class B-4 district tournament, the Sidney High golf team had a final competitive run through at Hillside Golf Course with a small gathering of schools including McCook, North Platte and Ogallala.

While the Red Raiders didn't quite manage to play their best as a group, the positive signs continued as they finished second to district favorite McCook by just five strokes. The Bison took 325 shots to win the quad with Sidney taking 330, North Platte 333 and Ogallala 405.

Three of the teams brought enough players for a junior varsity match with North Platte taking that title with a 365 to Sidney's 377. The McCook JV fnished with 386.

In the individual varsity competition, Kort Steele of North Platte took the top prize with a 76 while McCook's Noah Hoffman scored 77. The Raiders' Nate Dvorak (78) and Connor Dormann (80) were third and fourth respectively.

"There were a lot of positive signs but we still need a couple of players to shoot what they're capable of," said Raiders head coach Chuck Christensen. "Ryan (Birner) and Brady both shot 86s and they can both shoot in the high 70s or low 80s so that gives us a chance for first or second at districts right there.

"They're up here on the weekends and they're working hard. Garrett (Wamsley) could surprise a few people too and shoot in the low 80s. He's very capable of that," Christensen added.

Wamsley completed his round in 92 strokes after firing a 42 on the front nine.

Dvorak's round included a gut-check after the first hole. After his second shot hit a tree, he ended up in a tough spot where he had to hit his next shot with his feet below the ball. He then found himself in some weeds and had to punch up.

"After that I'm just thinking I don't have to panic. Just finish like a champion," Dvorak said. "Any great athlete knows they're going to win and I have to think like that. I can't let something like that get in my head."

Though he said he was putting very poorly, Dormann equalled his best round ever at Hillside and also matched his previous best competitive round. His round included equal nines of 40. The Sidney freshman also carded an 80 at Chadron last week.

"I was hitting the ball really well and reached a lot of greens in regulation," Dormann said. "When I didn't hit the greens I was chipping well. I had several three putts though. Way more than I should have."

Dormann's round included reaching a pair of par-5s in two. After landing his ball on the second green, he two-putted for birdie. Though he also reached the par-5 18th in two, he followed with one of his three putts.

The Raiders' varsity will be at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering on Thursday while the junior varisty will travel to the Four Winds Golf Course in Kimball. Both tournaments are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
