Harvey, McKay square off in Red-Blue game

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – With only about a day to prepare, not much effort was put into devising defensive schemes by either coaching staff in an effort to combat the deep level of talent on both sides in the annual Panhandle Prep All-Star Baskeball game.

With locals Cody McKay of Leyton and Lane Harvey of Sidney suiting up, McKay’s Blue team scored 63 points in the second half to win 110-98 at WNCC’s Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff on Saturday night.

Among the players on both rosters were some of the best recently graduated seniors in the Panhandle. McKay was the Warriors’ leading scorer last season while Harvey was the Red Raiders’ starting point guard for four years. For Harvey, he found himself wearing the same colors as those he had battled throughout his Raiders’ career.

“I had a blast these last two days getting to know these guys and getting to play with them. It was a fun time but there was some competitiveness too,” Harvey said. “It was really nice getting to play with the Scottsbluff guys and not have to go against them for a change.”

Harvey played along side the Bearcats’ Trent Harris and Ashley Jones.

As for McKay, it was his second all-star game in as many nights after he scored seven points in the Mid-Plains Area All-Star game in North Platte on Friday night. He often played opposite a familiar foe in Tyson Dahlgrin of Banner County. McKay arrived later than the rest of the players and only had a minimal amount of practice time before tip off.

“All-star games are fun no matter what so I really wanted to play in both games,” McKay said. “I missed an afternoon practice on Friday and only got in about a half hour with these guys.”

Harvey contributed eight points, while McKay added five.
