Sidney begins chip sealing of roads this week

The City of Sidney Street Department will begin chip sealing selected roads throughout the city this week.

Work will be conducted during three separate strings of days: July 15-17, July 20-24 and July 27-29.

Hank Radtke, city street superintendent, said chip sealing is a maintenance program that entails spraying a layer of oil, laying down chip rock and then rolling over top of the material.

“We try to get to every street every seven years,” he said.

The amount of streets to be chip sealed this year is comparable to previous years, he added.

On the scheduled work days this week and next week, residents who live near sections that will be chip sealed will need to ensure their vehicles are not on the street.

“During this time, we ask that you have all vehicles and trailers removed from [affected] streets by 7 a.m. each morning,” the release states. “It is also important that no water is running in the gutters on these dates.”

Between July 27-29, vehicles will need to be removed an hour earlier.

“On these dates, there must be no water running in the gutters, and all vehicles and trailers must be removed from the [affected streets] by 6 a.m.,” the release continues. “Vehicles remaining on the streets will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Radtke said once the material is applied, residents will be able to again use the streets.

“After we shoot the oil and the rock is laid down and rolled, people can drive and park back on it,” he said.
