Reduced and free school meal eligibility requirements set

Eligibility requirements for free and reduced school meals were recently set for the upcoming academic year.

"The Nebraska Department of Education's Nutrition Services office has announced the income eligibility requirements for free and reduced price meals for persons unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch, Breakfast, Special Milk and Child and Adult Care Food Programs," according to a media release from the Nebraska Department of Education.

The eligibility requirements will affect Sidney, Leyton, Potter-Dix and Creek Valley school districts, according to the NDE.

"Application forms are being given to all households with a letter to parents, guardians or adult participants," the release states. "To apply for free or reduced price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to the school or agency."

Additional applications are available from school principals, and the information provided on the application will be used to determine eligibility and may be verified at any time during the year by the school or other program officials.

Eligibility is determined by the total monthly household income and the number of household members.

A family of four with an annual income of $44,863 or less would qualify for reduced lunches, while an annual income of $31,525 would qualify the family for free lunches.

Children who are members of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are automatically eligible to receive free meals.

Applications for free or reduced school lunches may be submitted any time during the year.
