Head coach, four players suspended at Peetz

Peetz High School head football coach Scott Sorensen and four of his players have been suspended for the Bulldogs’ season opener this Friday evening against North Park.

Seniors Jordan Nelson and Wolf Wenneker, junior Cody Wilson and freshman Bryson Long each attended a second football camp over the summer and used school equipment – a violation of Colorado High School Activities Association rules. The players and their coach all received a one-game suspension from the CHSAA.

“I am going to be under restriction for this game, that’s for sure,” Sorensen said. “Right now, I’m just trying to get the kids reinstated. I have to write a report that I need to send to the CHSAA.

“It’s my fault for not knowing the rule,” he added. “Players can’t go to two padded camps, but they can go to as many skills camps as they’d like.”

The Bulldogs are scheduled to kick off against North Park, of Walden, Colo., in Peetz at 7 p.m. With the suspensions, the Bulldogs lose three of their most experienced skill players in addition to a promising freshman.

Nelson and Wilson both played big roles in the Bulldogs success last season. Nelson rushed for better than 1,000 yards and led the team in scoring as the Bulldogs posted a 9-2 record. Nelson was also the team leader in tackles from his position at middle linebacker.

Wilson led the team in receptions and accounted for 18 touchdowns in 2014. Opportunistic on defense, Wilson also topped the team in interceptions and fumble recoveries. He was also among the team leaders in tackles.

Wenneker was slated to be the starting quarterback in Friday’s opener.
