Raider X-country teams bring home pair of seconds

The Sidney High cross country teams put in strong efforts at the McCook Invite on Thursday, as both the boys and girls captured second-place finishes.

Additionally, Sidney had three medalists: Jami Flores, Mitch Porter and Ryan Aurich.

The Raiders boys' team finished with 38 points, just behind Holdrege (31). McCook was third with 65 points, Chase County fourth at 77 and Dundy County/Stratton rounded out the top five with 88.

The girls missed the top spot by just two points with 36 to Cozad's 34. Holdrege (47), Dundy County/Stratton (89) and Hitchcock County (89) completed the top five.

The girls' strong effort was led by Flores as she took home a fourth-place medal in 22:17.

Several other Sidney runners were bunched up just outside the medals. Chantal Riggs (22:48), Charlie Brockhaus (22:57), Erin Lindeman (23:00) and Abby Heller (23:03) finished in 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th places respectively. Mia Hernandez (25:25), despite being ill, finished 31st in the field of 65.

Porter and Aurich both medaled for Sidney in the boys' race. Porter finished fifth in 18:05, while Aurich was ninth in 18:41. The Raiders' team effort was evident with the finish of all their runners crossing in the top 20 among the 84 entered.

Michael Banaszak was just one second out of the medals as he completed the 5K course in 18:44 to finish 11th. He was followed by Jacob Schaub (18:56) in 13th, Brenner Keane (19:00) in 16th and Keaton Wakefield (19:15) in 18th.

The Raiders will stretch their legs again on Saturday when they travel to Alliance. The junior varsity is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
