Potter-Dix to host MAC one-act plays Monday

Eight high school teams will be performing one-act plays at the Potter-Dix Junior and Senior High School on Monday.

Students from Creek Valley, Leyton and Potter-Dix high schools will be up against five other Minuteman Activities Conference teams. The plays will begin at 9 a.m.

"After each team performs, they clear the stage and then go to a critique room to listen to what to three judges have to say," Beth Bogert, sponsor of the Potter-Dix team, explained in an email.

Awards for top teams and outstanding actors will be presented at the conclusion of the day.

"Most teams have been working since the beginning of the school year, and most have practices before or after school," Bogert said.

Because many of the students also compete on sports teams, it can be challenging to schedule rehearsal times, she added.

The long days for some students – school, sports practices and then the stage – highlights their commitment to academic and extracurricular endeavors, Bogert said.

"The schools pick which play they will do," she explained. "Some are very funny and others are tear jerkers. It's up to each director to pick what they think fits their actors best."

While only high school teams will be performing, some junior and middle school students will be behind the scenes helping with the lighting and music.

"It is truly remarkable what talented kids there are in the area," Bogert said. "It's so rewarding to see them go from using their talents on the court or field one minute, and then seeing them display their talents on the stage the next."
