Lady Warriors best Peetz, 50-18

The Leyton girls' basketball rolled to a 50-18 win over Peetz on Tuesday as the Lady Warriors remained unbeaten at 3-0.

Peetz fell to 1-2 with the loss.

The evening showcased a standout performance for Leyton's Diedra Waite. The Lady Warriors' senior shot 5-of-10 from the floor and was perfect on a trio of free-throws, all while grabbing four rebounds.

On the defensive side of the ball, no one was more effective at rebounding for Leyton than Katie Higgins as she snagged 10 grabs under the basket. She also scored 8 points, going 4-of-8 in the paint as one of the go-to inside shooters.

Taylor Berner scored nine points for the Lady Warriors and was fierce under both sides of the basket, garnering seven rebounds and making four assists. The trio of Natalie Cruise, Abbe Draper and Bailey Miller each scored six points and Jessica Houk added a deuce.

The offensive game of Peetz was unlike anything seen in recent years as the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score a single point in the first quarter – and then only pieced together three more quarters of six-point scoring each.

For Peetz, the weight of scoring fell squarely on the shoulders of Jodie Schumacher. The senior scored nine points in the game and she recorded the only three-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs.

A looming factor in the loss was the shooting percentage for Peetz. Schumacher alone went 2-of-17, with Mikenna Curlee going 1-of-5 and Cami Thompson shooting 1-of-7 from the floor.

Other scorers for Peetz were: Curlee (5), Thompson (2) and Tyra Foreman (2).

"That was not our best performance," Peetz co-head coach Jessica Schumacher said.

Morgan Meier, the fellow co-head coach for the Lady Bulldogs, said the team needs to work on getting better going forward.

"We have to work on better executing what we have worked on in practice," Meier said. "It's that simple."

Peetz sophomore Cami Thompson said the loss, from her point of view, came down to playing fundamental basketball.

"We need better offense and better passing," Thompson said. "I think we will be focusing on more inside shooting than outside."

Lady Warrior junior Taylor Berner said the game plan was about getting ready to stop the skill set of two Lady Bulldog players.

"We were trying to contain (Jodie Schumacher) and (Curlee) because they are two of the best players on the team," Berner said. "We worked really hard at shutting them down. This week we prepared for them by driving up and down the court a lot in practice."

Nick Newkirk, the Leyton head coach, said while his offensive game plan worked well, it was his defensive players that would make the difference going into the remainder of the year.

"I'm impressed with our defense and I think it's going to help win us a lot of games this season," Newkirk said.

The Lady Warriors will face South Platte at 6 p.m. on Friday and will face Potter-Dix at home on Tuesday.

Peetz will host Pawnee on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
