Raiders take second at Ogallala duals

The Sidney wrestling team won four out of five duals to take second place at the Ogallala Dual Tournament held Saturday.

The Raiders picked up wins over Chase County, Gering, Gordon-Rushville and Wray, Colo. Their lone loss was to Gothenburg.

SHS wrestling coach John Ganser said his team had its ups and downs in the event.

"Dual wrestling is a little bit different than wrestling in a tournament. You want to get all the bonus points that you can and not give up any," he said. "We gave up some pins when we needed to avoid that...It was a mixed bag for us, really."

Sidney edged Chase County 41-36, with KC Higer (126) and Jack Feddersen (132) picking up individual wins. The Raiders also had five wins by forfeit.

Against Gering, Sidney won 48-33. Kaden Vowers (113), Feddersen (132) and Kade Price (195) had wins, while the Raiders got five wins via forfeit.

The Raiders rolled past Gordon-Rushville for a 55-18 victory. Vowers (113), Colton Peckham (120), Higer (126), Feddersen (132), Bret Jaggers (138) and Patraic Hays (170) all had wins in the dual.

Gothenburg avenged its Dec. 4 loss to Sidney on Saturday, as the Raiders fell 51-30. SHS won the earlier match-up 39-33.

The Raiders were a bit short-handed Saturday against Gothenburg as they had three losses due to forfeits. Gothenburg had a full slate of wrestlers in the dual.

"We got the best of them in the first match of December," Ganser said. "We would've had to perform better than we did Saturday, even if we were at full strength...We did perform better in a couple matches."

Despite the loss, Ganser said two of the Raiders' highlights Saturday came against Gothenburg.

"Kaden Vowers went up against a quality opponent against Gothenburg and really stayed after him and pinned him late in the match," Ganser said. "I also liked what I saw out of Seth McMillen in the Gothenburg dual as well."

Vowers topped Trevor Holley by pin in 5:51 in the 113 weight class, while McMillen won by pin in 42 seconds against Josh Reinhard.

Sidney also had a 52-22 win over Wray on Saturday. Trey Arellano (106), Higer (126), Feddersen (132) and Kade Price (195) each had wins in the dual.

The Raiders are back in action Thursday as they travel to Bridgeport. It is slated to get underway at 6 p.m.
