Smith named to Sidney School Board

A vacancy on the Sidney Public Schools Board of Education was filled during the March regular meeting, held Monday evening, with Brenda Smith finishing out remainder of the seat's term beginning in May.

"All of our applicants want to do what's best for the students of our district," Board president Tom Von Seggern said. "It is plain to see, and comforting to know, that we have such excellent applicants for our vacancy on the schools board.

"Let me say that this board takes dedication to excellence, it is a large time commitment and we are often held in public scrutiny, but it is very rewarding when our students begin their careers and come back home to thank a teacher, counselor and school leaders."

Four applicants applied for the seat vacated by Janet Rosenbaum, who served as a board member for three years, from 2013 to 2016, before resigning to accept a position with a company in Hastings. The board approved her resignation during their March meeting.

During last month's regular meeting, a committee was formed to decide on who would fill Rosenbaum's seat. Von Seggern and board member Randy Flamig served on the committee.

Von Seggern said Rosenbaum had "served the district with loyalty, dedication and a vision for the district she shared with her peers, as we would expect from any of the applicants."

"The four applicants want to serve the public and make Sidney better, They want to do whats right for the right reasons," he said. "Each one shared their leadership credentials. We need people with these attributes.

"I encourage our applicants to apply in our general election and when vacancies arise like this one."

Smith will finish out the remainder of Rosenbaum's term, which will end in December 2018.
