An eye for design

Whitney Goeman, Design Editor, is the newest face at the Sidney Sun-Telegraph. Her latest awards speak to the excellence Goeman strives for in her new career.

Graphic design was not Goeman's first choice fresh out of high school. The Leyton Graduate first toyed with the idea of a career in culinary arts before making the commitment to graphic design.

Goeman grew up in the small town of Broadwater, population 126. Goeman said she began attending Leyton in 6th grade, graduating in 2014.

"I never really knew what I wanted to do in high school," said Goeman.

With an eye for design, and interest in software and computers Goeman eventually set her eyes on a degree in graphic design, attending college in McCook at Mid Plains Community College (MPCC).

Goeman graduated from MPCC in May with her Associates of Applied Science in Graphic Design, but not before walking away with a few prestigious awards.

During her time at MPCC Goeman was part of Phi Theta Lambda (PBL).

PBL is the collegiate division of Future Business Leaders of America or FBLA. PBL aids in the building of skills students will need into their chosen career field.

This past year Goeman said she and a partner, Emily Karr, submitted concepts for state competition in both the desktop publishing and computer animations.

"We came up with concepts for a made-up company," Goeman said. "We made brochures, logos, posters and advertising. For the animation part, we had to come up with a thirty to sixty second promotion for PBL."

Goeman and Karr traveled to the Nebraska State Leadership Conference in Kearney in March. As part of the competition the duo took tests and conducted presentations on the two projects they submitted. Both projects were awarded first place.

The projects and their creators were then invited to the the 2016 FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. The three-day event held competitions ranging from hospitality, and accounting to business decision making and graphic design.

"Prior to the competition we had the opportunity to make any changes to the projects we needed to," said Goeman.

Goeman and Karr walked away from the conference with 5th place in computer animation and 7th in desktop design.

Goeman started with the paper just days after her college graduation, she said, and she's excited about her chosen career, "the paper keeps me busy and challenges me."
