Sidney Public Schools sets goals for 2016-17

Sidney Public School Board has approved its goals for the upcoming school year.

Sidney Superintendent Jay Ehler said that the goals are set based on the observations of the previous school years. Ehler said after discussion about school needs, the goals are prioritized on a larger level and then smaller goals are made in each individual school.

School Board officials approved six goals they plan to focus on this school year. The first is to continue to provide quality technology access for teachers and students.

Ehler said Sidney is a Google school, which means students use Chrome Books or lap tops to complete certain tasks.

“We want to provide the students with a variety of different types of technology to increase exposure,” said Ehler.

With as fast as technology is changing, Ehler said, keeping up with this ever changing field is valuable to the students.

Other goals the board set are to focus on positive and effective relationships with Sidney’s business community and parents and to review bus routes with an emphasis on safety and efficacy.

Reviewing administrative structure and responsibilities Ehler said is a goal set to streamline and maintain efficacy in every school in the district.

“All of our principles are taking on other duties and with so many small buildings in the district its always something we look at to figure out the most efficient way to run each of them,” Ehler said.

Another school board goal is to “continue to focus on and find ways to improve fiscal responsibility with out jeopardizing quality of instruction.”

Furthering their fiscal responsibility, the board reviews bills payable and financial reports at school board meetings each month, these meetings are open to the public and are held the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the District Administration Building.

Continuing with leading edge trends in education is the sixth goal set for the year. The board plans to continue to identify gaps and implement improvements where necessary.
