Sidney kicks off Christmas season

Sidney residents braved the cold temperatures Saturday to kick off the Christmas season with a day full of events provided by the Cheyenne County Chamber or Commerce.

Saturday's events began with the arrival of the Miniature Union Pacific Train, the tiny train gave rides to children and adults in Hickory Square.

Keeping train passengers warm, Membership Director Sandy Goble said the Friends of the Sidney Library were serving hot cocoa during the rides.

Train rides wrapped up just before the Parade of Lights and Christmas Kick off got underway in downtown Sidney.

There were three categories for entry winners, Goble said. The Griswold Award went to The Post gas and convenience store for their well lit Winnebago. The Fantasy Award went to, Imagine That with their Snow globe adorned vehicle, and the Nostalgic Holidays Award went to the Sidney Fire Department, with their highly decorated fire truck, complete with Santa.

According to Goble, weather was not a deterrent for the parade, and attendance was in the hundreds.

"We were so impressed by the number of people that volunteered, the community really came together for the event," Goble said.

The days events were wrapped up Saturday evening with big man himself, Santa, lighting the large Christmas tree in Hickory square.
