KSB bringing back Yard of the Month

Keep Sidney Beautiful is bringing back its Yard of the Month contest.

The process begins in May with the first house to be named in June, Bev Arellano, KSB director, said.

“We’ll drive around and look for the yard that looks really nice,” Arellano said. “People can call in and nominate people for their yard, and then our board goes by those houses. Then we’ll make a decision at our board meeting about what house we want to choose.”

With the honor comes a sign for the yard that will stand for a month and having their picture taken for publication.

KSB is looking for yards that show a strong effort in their maintenance, Arellano said.

“Most of the homes we’ve chosen, the flowers are beautiful, the grass is mowed, it’s green, the yard is well kept up. That’s what we’re looking for,” she said.

Having flowers is not a requisite, though.

“Just something that is clean,” Arellano said. “Something that stands out a little bit. Or even if you feel that your neighbor works really hard on their yard, call in and nominate them.

She added, “It doesn’t have to be on the main street, it can be anywhere within Sidney limits.”

This will be the first time the KSB has named a Yard of the Month in more than a year.

Arellano is glad to see the program brought back to Sidney.

“It’s good for the community and it gets our name out there,” she said. “It’s nice to recognize people for the hard work they do on their yard.”

Arellano hopes the contest will be an incentive for people to keep their yards nice, as well.

“It’s an inspiration for others to keep their yards up and plant some flowers,” she said.

Denise Wilkinson, Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce CEO, said bringing back the contest is “a great idea.”

“It goes in conjunction with the city clean up, the new rules they’re implementing,” she said. “Anything we can do to make our community look better will make it look more attractive to businesses coming in.”
