Sidney Legion teams play home openers

Sidney's American Legion baseball teams made their first appearance at home Wednesday, hosting Gering in action at Legion Field.

It marked the first time in two years Sidney has fielded both Junior and Senior teams, with inexperienced players coming up from the lower ranks to compete at the Junior level.

The youngsters held their own for three innings, holding Gering to three runs in as many innings.

But the visitors exploded for 13 runs in the fourth, batting around plus some on the way to a 16-1 lead.

Sidney did mount its best offensive threat in the bottom of the fourth as it worked to avoid a 15-runs-after-four-innings ruling to end the game.

Jackson Witt and Shawn Ellwanger got things started for Sidney in the fourth, knocking back to back singles, followed by a walk to Sam Ashman. Nathan Hoffrock put Sidney on the board with another single, pushing Witt across the plate.
