Dalton man injured at Leyton School

A volunteer helping install the new scoreboard at the Leyton Schools football field was injured Tuesday when his hand was caught by an auger.

Ryan Borges, of Dalton, was helping set the new scoreboard, digging holes for the i-beam supports Tuesday evening. The first hole was dug without incident. The second, however, caught his hand between the auger and the dirt. The auger broke a bone in his hand, tore a muscle and made a large laceration.

“It smashed hard against the side of the hole,” Borges said from Loveland, CO., Wednesday. He was transported to McKee Medical Center in Loveland from Sidney Regional Medical Center Tuesday.

“I’m hoping to be released today,” he said Wednesday. “They fixed what they could, removed what they couldn’t an sewed it back up.”

Recovery from the injury may disrupt his work as a staking engineer who designs powerlines.

“It is still pretty early,” he said.

Borges thanks the first responders from Gurley Fire and Rescue, Dalton Fire and Rescue, the Sidney ambulance service and the emergency room doctors at Sidney Regional Medical Center for their response.
