Peetz advances to 6-man semi-finals

FLEMING -On Oct. 13, Peetz traveled to Fleming, defeating the Wildcats 39-26 in a night game. On Nov. 4, the Bulldogs defeated the Wildcats in the quarterfinals playoff game at Fleming 40-28.

"They were well-prepared," Peetz coach Scott Sorensen said of the Wildcats after the game.

The first quarter staged the game to be a tough contest with Peetz earning eight points to Fleming's six. The prediction wasn't far off for much of the game was a defensive battle. The first half ended with Peetz holding onto a narrow lead 16-6.

Peetz kicked to Fleming in the opening drive of the second half. Fleming was stopped with three and out.

At about six minutes into the third quarter, Peetz No. 40 Helmuth Wenneker ran in the first points of the second half, expanding the Bulldogs' lead to 24-6 with the point-after kick.

The defensive battle continued through the period with Fleming scoring the last points of the third quarter to keep the game at a 10-point spread: 24-14 Peetz.

Early in the fourth, Peetz pushed into the endzone with a hard-fought drive to expand the lead to 32-14 with the extra-point kick. With 8:09 left in the game, Fleming scores their third touchdown with a failed extra-point attempt to make a 32-20 game.

With 3:25 left in the game, Wenneker received the call again, scoring on a rushing play. The extra two points made for a 40-20 lead. About 45 seconds later on the game clock, Fleming was back in scoring position, a touchdown reception and point-after resulted in a 40-28 game.

Peetz intercepted a pass with about 1:22 left in the game and the clock was allowed to run for a final score of 40-28.

Most of the Peetz offense was in their running game. The Bulldogs recorded only 43 yards in the air while earning 196 yards rushing for 239 yards. Wenneker lead the Bulldogs with 117 offensive yards; 81 rushing and 36 receiving. He had two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.

"I was happy with our offense," Sorensen said.

Wenneker earned 18 points in the game, junior Zachary Holtz 10, and senior Jake Curlee and junior Bryson Long earned six each.

The outcome of the game was in part set when the Bulldogs made the Wildcats throw more in the second half.

Peetz will host Kit Carson at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. Kit Carson defeated Prairie 32-26 Saturday. Kit Carson defeated Prairie 32-26. Prairie handed Peetz their only loss of the season, Oct. 6 at Prairie by a score of 44-41. The championship is scheduled for Nov. 18 between the winner of Peetz and Kit Carson, and the winner of Stratton/Liberty and Cheyenne Wells.
