Red Raiders Struggle on the Road

Sidney High School's Red Raider Basketball team hit a rough patch over the last week with losses against the Scottsbluff Bearcats on Friday and the Sterling, CO Tigers on Saturday.

The losses dropped the Red Raiders overall record to 10-7 on the season.

The matchup with district opponent Scottsbluff would prove to be an intense one, with both teams battling and exchanging leads until the Bearcats pulled away in the fourth quarter with 28 points, sealing the win 73-63.

The game started with both teams opening up their shooting attack, combining for five 3 point baskets in the first five minutes of the first quarter.

Sidney senior Jon Smith hit three of the three pointers, and led the Red Raiders to a 16-14 lead going into the second quarter.

In the second, Scottsbluff senior Conner McCracken scored seven points in the opening minutes to give the Bearcats a 21-18 advantage. As time wore down in the half, Sidney fought back to retake the lead, but the Bearcats finished with a run of their own to take a 32-27 lead into the intermission.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with Sidney retaking the lead, then the Bearcats storming back to go up 36-32 midway through the period.

Sidney then went on a 15-3 run, but the Bearcats held firm and fought back, ending the third period down by two, 47-45.

The fourth quarter started with both teams trading the lead and battling, but the Bearcats pulled away on the strength of Devin Buderus' 15 points down the stretch. Sidney was unable to close the gap in the final minutes, and fell to Scottsbluff by a final score of 73-63. Arik Doty and Jon Smith led the Sidney scoring with 17 points each.

On Saturday the Red Raiders travelled to Colorado to take on the undefeated Sterling Tigers in Sterling.

The Raiders knew the were in for a tough matchup against the Tigers big men, and jumped out quickly to an 8-4 lead in the first period.

The Tigers quickly went on a run of their own with 6'8" senior Bodie Hume and senior Riley Schaefer leading the way to make the score 35-24 at the half.

The second half continued with the Tigers dominating, and Bodie Hume scored 27 points with a series of outside shots and dunks that brought the home crowd to its feet. Sidney's boys hung in throughout the game, and played solidly to keep the game close, but were unable to stop the Tigers attack and were overmatched with the home teams size, having five players on the roster over 6'4" in height.

The Red Raiders next opponent is Chadron, which visits Sidney for a conference matchup on January 26.
