Leyton Falls To Bayard

Leyton's varsity basketball teams both lost to the visiting Bayard Tigers squads on Tuesday in Dalton.

The Lady Warriors (9-10, 2-3 in district) started the night's action against the Lady Tigers (11-8, 3-4 in district) hoping to end a two game losing streak, but started the game slowly and fell behind 20-6 at the end of the first period.

The girls fought back in the second, and by the half had narrowed the deficit to only 8 points, 27-19.

But that's as close as they would get as Bayard continued to score consistently, while Leyton fell behind. Throughout the second half, the Lady Warriors were unable to stop Bayard's offense while having trouble maintaining a consistent offensive attack of their own. The game ended with Bayard earning the win, 51-36. Leyton's Madelyn Watchorn led the scoring for the Lady Warriors with 14 points.

Leyton's boys squad (4-13, 4-5 in district) hoped to also stop a two game losing streak against the Tigers (10-8, 6-4 in district), but a tight, competitive start quickly unraveled for the home team. Battling the visitors in the first period, the Warriors were able to end the first stanza down by 3, 15-12, and it seemed that Leyton might be able to upset the visitors if they could maintain the level of play they exhibit in the first quarter. However, the Tigers found their rhythm and were able to score effectively while shutting down the Warriors offense.

The remaining three periods of the game were a lopsided contest, with Bayard scoring 37 points while Leyton was only able to manage 13 points through the final 24 minutes of play. No Leyton players scored in double digits, and senior Jaydin Gartner and sophomore Drew Haley led the scoring for the Warriors with eight points each. The Leyton teams are back in action on Friday, Feb. 16th when they travel to Garden County to take on the Eagles in a conference match up.
