Sidney Cheerleaders Chosen to Work State Wrestling

When the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament commences Thursday, Sidney will be represented by more than its wrestlers.

The Sidney Cheer Squad will also have a strong presence at the state meet, serving the tournament as one of two cheer teams chosen to work the mats as assistance to the timers and referees, helping to film the tournament, and escort wrestlers into the spotlight during the parade of champions prior to the finals.

The 18 Sidney squad members will join a contingent from Hastings High School to assist with the tournament. On the mat, squad members will be watching the clock at the end of each period, tapping referees on the back with a rolled up towel to signal the concentrating referees that time has run out. On other parts of the floor, the squads will assist with filming of matches.

The squads will also have an integral part of the big show on the final day, helping bring in wrestlers who have earned the right to take part of the Parade of Champions, where finalists enter the arena prior to the finals.

Sidney was chosen for the duty after Coach Abby Green threw Sidney's name in the hat. Green told Nebraska School Activities Association officials her squad could represent the state well, and for the girls, "it's a great way to represent western Nebraska," she said.

Team members include: Kate Dible, Ashley Tyson, Carley Witt, Jocilyn Hessler, Emily Secrest , Cassie Kilmurray, Morgan Sonnie , Paige Hobson, Haley Thies, Ashlyn Sutton , Kaylie Mason, Laney Wagner, Olyvia Frerichs, Mason Nightingale, Kaylee Eddy, Haley Williamson, Abbie Johnson and Miranda Ahrendt.
