City Of Sidney Recording Growth In Home Ownership

While the Sidney and Cheyenne County community is experiencing changes, it is not without growth as well.

Sidney City Manager Ed Sadler reported to the City Council Tuesday that the City has recorded “just under 580 new customers” in the last two years. New customers are new utility services, not transfers of service, he said.

According to a report provided by Sadler, 318 of the new customers are from Nebraska, 145 are from Colorado, and 22 were from Wyoming. Eight new customers were from California, seven from Arizona, five from the state’s of South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Kansas, and five from out of the country. There are also new customers from Canada, Mexico, Russia, Wisconsin, Washington, Virginia, Tennessee, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Oklahoma, Ohio, North Dakota, New Mexico, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Nevada, Missouri, Minnesota and Michigan.

The City Council also reviewed the budget reports for May. Finance Director David Scott’s report says the City has collected 62 percent of the budgeted property tax and DMV fees, $961,695. In his report, Scott said he expects the City to be “a little over what we budgeted.”

“I believe this is due mostly to the collection of past fiscal years property taxes in the current fiscal year,” he said in his report. “During the next budget cycle, this will become a point of concern.”

Sales tax came in at 58 percent of the budgeted May sales taxes at $1.7 million. In May of 2017, the City had received about $1.5 million in sales tax or 49 percent of the budgeted amount.

Fees for Service account for $263,744, 58 percent of the May 2018 budget.

“At this point last year, we had received $255,964, and as of May 2016 we had received $256,457,” Scott said in his report.

He said 2015 was higher, but there were more fees for building signs and permits.

In other business, the City Council approved Ben Schmitt as the newest member of the Planning Commission.
