  • Gipfert sentenced to probation in shaken baby case

    Nancy Gipfert was sentenced to 24 months of probation, the first 90 days to be served in Cheyenne County jail, for her part in an incident which led to the permanent brain injury of an infant in her care. In November a jury of six men and six women found Gipfert guilty of negligent child abuse, a class I misdemeanor. The two-month-old victim in this case became seriously ill after his first visit to Gipfert's daycare on Sept. 13, 2011. It was later confirmed that he suffered from bleeding...

    Engineering students from the South Dakota School of Mines meet with Tyler Shaw's physics class at Sidney High School on Thursday and offered them a challenge: tear down then rebuild a bridge. With no schematics to guide them, the class rebuilt the structure in ten minutes.... Full story

  • Court Briefs - 01-09-14

    The following people appeared in Cheyenne County Court on Tuesday, Jan. 7, before the Honorable Randin R. Roland: Brian Everingim, age 34 of Colorado Springs, Colo. appeared for entry of plea on a charge of Obstructing a Peace Officer and Resisting Arrest. Both are class I misdemeanors. He pled guilty to Obstructing and Resisting Arrest was dismissed. He received a sentence of 11 days in jail. William Jackson, age 44 of Dalton, appeared for a preliminary hearing on a charge of Terroristic Threats and Use of a Deadly Weapon to commit a felony.... Full story

    While researching a story on the 1951 Panhandle B Conference Champion Sidney Maroons football team, I came across a Sidney Telegraph article of that year listing all the previous champions. The first teams listed were “O.J. Weymouth’s teams in 1926 and 1927.” I have since come to discover that the Scottsbluff Bearcats were the Western Conference Champions of 1926.
