  • Nebraska keeps it simple in Red-White scrimmage

    Associated Press|Apr 6, 2013

LINCOLN (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini calls the spring game a show for the fans. Thing is, Pelini doesn’t plan to show them much Saturday in the Red-White scrimmage. Quarterback Taylor Martinez probably will play only a couple series and other starters won’t play at all. With BTN televising the event, the Cornhuskers will show next to nothing on offense and defense so this fall’s opponents gain no scouting advantage. Young players will benefit most. For many it will be their first... Full story

Senator: NASA to lasso asteroid, bring it closer WASHINGTON (AP) — A top senator says President Barack Obama and NASA are planning for a robotic spaceship to lasso a small asteroid and park it near the moon. Then astronauts would explore it in 2021. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said the plan would speed up by four years the existing mission to land astronauts on an asteroid by bringing the space rock closer to Earth. Nelson, who is chairman of the Senate Science and Space Subcommittee, said Friday that Obama is putting $100 million for the...

  • FAA delays closing of airport control towers

    Associated Press|Apr 6, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The closings of control towers at 149 small airports, due to begin this weekend because of government-wide spending cuts, are being delayed until mid-June, federal regulators announced Friday. The Federal Aviation Administration said it needs more time to deal with legal challenges to the closures. Also, about 50 airport authorities and other “stakeholders” have indicated they want to fund the operations of the towers themselves rather than see them shut down, and more time will be needed to work out those plans, the...

  • School faces new questions in Colorado massacre

    Associated Press|Apr 6, 2013

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — New questions confronted the University of Colorado, Denver on Friday amid disclosures that a psychiatrist who treated theater shooting suspect James Holmes had warned campus police a month before the deadly assault that Holmes was dangerous and had homicidal thoughts. Court documents made public Thursday revealed Dr. Lynne Fenton also told a campus police officer in June that the shooting suspect had threatened and intimidated her. Fenton’s blunt warning came more than a month before the July 20 attack at a movie t...

  • Ware makes big, bad U of L people's choice

    Associated Press|Apr 6, 2013

ATLANTA (AP) — Louisville already had the bigger names, the better team and some unfinished business after coming up short in last year’s Final Four. All Wichita State had was the cute-and-cuddly underdog angle. Now the Shockers don’t even have that. Kevin Ware is everybody’s favorite player since he broke his leg in gruesome fashion last weekend yet summoned the strength to encourage his teammates, and having him at the Final Four has given the top-seeded Cardinals (33-5) added motivation to claim the title that eluded them last year....

  • From the Sidelines

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 6, 2013

From the day I accepted my first newsroom position back in 1984, I realized there would be good times and bad. That said, this column blends the two, marking the final edition for yours truly at the Sun-Telegraph, as I have accepted the sports editor’s position at the Rawlins (Wyo.) Daily Times, and will begin there Tuesday. The opportunity popped up a few weeks back, and the move seems to be one that will head me in the right direction. When I came on board here in January 2012, my responsibilities were in the news slot. Former sports writer... Full story

  • Federal program helps man buy Columbus business

    Associated Press|Apr 6, 2013

COLUMBUS (AP) — Gene Mohrmann had been looking for the right opportunity to retire for a few years. He was ready to leave Mohrmann Tool Inc. in the right hands, if he could only find those right hands first. Then, last March, Joe Eckert came through the door. The Columbus Telegram reports Eckert walked in wanting to start a machining shop near his hometown of Tilden and just wanted to get a sense of what owning that shop would entail. During that first visit, the conversation quickly turned to owning that particular shop. “Within about 20...

  • The aftermath of Easter

Father John Andrews, Christ Episcopal Church, Sidney|Apr 6, 2013

In the Church of England and in the Anglican Church of Australia this Sunday, the Sunday after Easter is commonly referred to as Low Sunday mainly because it seems to be the Sunday that has amongst the lowest attendance for the year. Several reason have been advanced for this, the main theory seeming to be that, having attended so much church during the past week of Holy week with a Passover service, Maundy Thursday services, Good Friday and then the celebrations on the Saturday of Easter Eve with the Coming of the Light service and to top it...

  • Wall Street hogs still running wild

    Jim Hightower, Syndicated Columnist|Apr 6, 2013

Wall Street is a beast. And proud of it! In fact, a pair of animals are the stock market’s longtime symbols: One is a snorting bull, representing surging stock prices; the other is a bear, representing a down market devouring stock value. But I recently received a letter from a creative fellow named Charles saying that we need a third animal to depict the true nature of the Wall Street beast: a hog. Not just a little piggy, writes Charles — but a HOG, a really big one. Yes! And we could name it “Jamie.” Jamie Dimon — I mean the...

  • Lisana's Lines

    Lisana Eckenrode, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 6, 2013

Two of the events I covered this week involved the heroes of the local fire departments. On Thursday, I took pictures at the presentation of the Heroes Among Us award to the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department. On Friday, I attended the Fireman’s Ball. These brought back fond memories for me about some other heroic fire fighters that I met a couple of years ago. It was a slightly darker time in my life. After being unemployed for two years, I had to move in with family when my job ended at the same time as the lease on my apartment. I found... Full story

  • Water Wise: A look at the municipal side of water conservation

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 6, 2013

Conserving water in homes and outdoor landscapes not only helps preserve this vital natural resource, but also has benefits that go beyond what some may realize. The Cities of Gering, Scottsbluff and Terrytown encourage all residents to voluntarily conserve water. While each community operates a separate water system and faces different obstacles, a common goal is to have customers use water wisely. The annual average amount of water produced by the City of Gering is 1.1 billion gallons; in...

Looking for a complete, demanding and rewarding workout system to get you into “elite” physical shape? In 2006 trainer Lee Jacobsen teamed up with Sonja Ehlers to bring Sidney an Elite Fitness program. “Our name is Elite Fitness, but we teach the CrossFit method,” said Jacobsen. “We are not yet officially affiliated with CrossFit, but our goal is to become a certified affiliate. We are both certified through CrossFit.” “We started this way before it became popular, and introduced... Full story
