  • The end of the season

Kyril McGowan Holy American Orthodox Church|Jan 24, 2014

As I sit here in my office, trying to put together a column for this newspaper, I wonder what I should say. A great many things are happening in the world in religious circles. Those Orthodox Christian Churches who use the Julian or Old Style Calendars in two days will be wrapping up their Christmas Season and celebrating the Octave of the Feast of the Epiphany or Theophany. The Feast of the Circumcision which was celebrated on our January 1st commemorates Jesus’ dedication to God as the first born son of Mary. It was also the day when Jesus r...

  • Top seeds fall in MAC

    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

The last time the Minatare Indians lost a game prior to the semi-final of the MAC tournament Thursday night was in last season's sub districts. Potter-Dix did the damage on that occasion. For the Coyotes it was deja vu, all over again. Their 61-53 upset of the Indians at Sidney Middle School stopped Minatare's (9-1) nine game winning streak. The win earns the Coyotes (7-5) the right to meet local nemisis Leyton in the MAC finals on Friday. The Leyton Warriors punched their ticket to the final...

  • Top seeds fall in MAC

    Dave Faries|Jan 24, 2014

Sometimes underdogs don't follow the script. For much of the first half and the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, top seeded Creek Valley held the Warriors at arm's length. But a persistent Leyton picked away until they emerged with a 54-48 win in the second round of the MAC tournament Thursday night at Sidney Middle School. The victory sends Leyton to the championship game on Saturday against Potter-Dix. A Katy Ernest buzzer-beater knotted things at 33-33 heading into the final period....

The Potter-Dix girls made sure that the finals of the MAC Tournament on Saturday night would be represented by combatants wearing the same colors in both the boys and girls games. As Leyton and Potter-Dix was earlier established to be the boys MAC final, so too will be the girls title game. Potter-Dix insured their place with a 39-29 win over Garden County at Sidney Middle School on Thursday night. Earlier, the Leyton Warriors eliminated the defending MAC champion and top seeded Creek Valley...

    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

For the Warriors, three times will have to be the charm if they are to capture the 2014 MAC Tournament title Saturday night. After a sluggish beginning the Warriors (9-3) earned passage to the MAC finals with a 53-36 semi-final win over the Garden County Eagles (5-6) at Sidney Middle School on Thursday night. "It looked to me at times like we were playing in sand," said Warriors Head Coach Gary Oltmann. "But we got our job done on defense." After fighting through the first quarter to a 12-12...
