    Come the first of the month, Chris Gabis will realize a long-time dream, that of becoming a full-time firefighter. "I think every kids wants to be a firefighter at one time or another," Gabis said. His dream was realized earlier this month when it was announced he was chosen as one of two new paid firemen to be accepted into the Scottsbluff Fire Department.     Local artist Ben Darling was recently commissioned to paint a mural for the Wildcat Hills Nature Center's addition outside of Scottsbluff. Darling is a professional artist that has had a passion for art all his life. For Darling, art is not just a past time, he also teaches art classes for grades 6-12 at Sidney Public Schools.   • High Plains Art Council seeking member committed to rural arts

    Bringing culture and art to rural Nebraska has been the goal of Sidney’s High Plains Art Council (HPAC) since its inception in 1982. The group has recently lost key members and is searching for committed members that have a passion for arts in rural communities.     For the first time in more than 20 years, Sidney wrestlers came home with more than one state champion in their midst. Raiders Trey Arellano and Derek Robb captured gold over the weekend, becoming the first duo of Sidney champions since 1993. In all, five Sidney wrestlers competed in the state tournament, with Arellano, at 120 pounds, and Robb, 152, closing competition as medalists.     Sidney junior Derek Robb re-wrote the record books on both the school and state level with four wins, all by pin, at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament over the weekend. With the four pins, Robb now holds the record for most pins in a season with 46, also a Sidney High record. Robb finished the year with a 56-0 overall record. Robb now also holds the mark for career wins at Sidney High School with 141. The old mark, 136, was set by Steven Vach, another Sidney state champion, from 1992-96....
