  • Up to 12,000 US, allied troops for Afghanistan

    Associated Press|Feb 23, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and its NATO allies revealed Friday they may keep as many as 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after the combat mission ends next year, largely American forces tasked with hunting down remnants of al-Qaida and helping Afghan forces with their own security. Patience with the 11-year-old war has grown thin in the U.S. and Europe, yet Washington and its allies feel they cannot pick up and leave without risking a repeat of what happened in Afghanistan after Soviet troops withdrew in 1989: Attention turned elsewhere, the T...

  • Snowstorm dies down, Midwest travel woes tick up

    Associated Press|Feb 23, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gusty winds and iced-over roadways made for treacherous Midwest travel Friday as a major winter storm headed east over the Great Lakes. Four deaths have been linked to the storm, including three from traffic accidents. Hundreds of flights in and out of Chicago’s two airports were canceled Friday morning, and the city was clearing about 3 inches of snow from its streets, and the Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo., airports both reopened Friday morning but had numerous can...

  • Spartans, Buckeyes scrap Sunday

    Associated Press|Feb 23, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — For a change, Michigan State and Ohio State aren’t playing for a trophy. After contesting Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles in two of their last three meetings, there’ll be no hardware up for grabs when the fourth-ranked Spartans square off with the No. 18 Buckeyes on Sunday. That does not mean there is nothing on the line. “It’s like there’s always a trophy on the line every time you play one of the top-tier teams in this conference,” Ohio State guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. said. “It’s clutch time now. It’s gu...

  • In God we trust

Doug Birky, Evangelical Free Church, Sidney|Feb 23, 2013

It’s in the news every day: Our economic problems, the growing U.S. debt, recession worries, out of control government spending, our “paying problem,” sequestration, unemployment rates, budget cuts, tax hikes, and more. As a result many people in our nation have very little trust in how our government leaders view and spend our tax dollars. That’s why we should always put our trust in God, especially when it comes to our personal finances. Here is just some of what the Bible says should be our life- guiding principles concerning money: Blessed...

  • Brace yourself!

    Peter McKay, Syndicated Columnist|Feb 23, 2013

This past Sunday, I paged through the Real Estate section of the paper to see if we could find a home closer to my children’s orthodontist. Most people look for an easy commute to work or want to be near good schools. The way things have been going lately, most of our time (and money) seems to be spent in trying to keep our kids from growing up to look like hillbillies or the British royal family. I have five kids, all of whom have big beautiful teeth and small cramped jaws and will need some form of orthodontia (Latin for “torture of the mou...

  • Do more than the minimum on the minimum wage

    Jim Hightower, Syndicated Columnist|Feb 23, 2013

“In the wealthiest nation on earth,” President Obama declared in his State of the Union speech, “no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty.” Right! Way to go! Not only does his call to raise America’s minimum wage put some real pop in populism, but it could finally start putting some ethics back in our country’s much-celebrated (but rarely honored) “work ethic.” Kudos to Obama for putting good economics and good morals together — and for putting this long overdue increase on the front burner. But then came the number: $9 an hou...

  • Looking Back

    Feb 23, 2013

These stories from the past first appeared in The Sidney Telegraph. Original writing is preserved, though some stories were shortened for space reasons. 100 YEARS AGO ‘Usual Sprints’ February 22, 1913 The village had its usual two runaways last Saturday. These are getting to be so regular that citizens hardly look at a team speeding by. The first was Ray Nelson’s well-trained team. They objected to the looks of a bull tearing through the street hotly pursued by Nelse Olson and son. Roy managed to guide his runaways toward the east end of town...

GOLDEN, Colo. The recording was played at a preliminary hearing at which a judge decided there’s enough evidence for Austin Sigg to stand trial in both the death of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway in October and an attack on a jogger at nearby Ketner Lake in May. Sigg is charged with murder, kidna...
