    Friday, Sidney High School students will be helping with fire relief efforts in Haxtun, Colorado. A state of emergency was declared in Logan County after a brush fire destroyed more than 30,000 acres this week. SHS students will visit businesses from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to clean away trash in exchange for a donation to Haxtun's fire relief fund.     Sidney Police Department has received an $1,800 grant from the Nebraska Department of Roads Highway Safety Office. The funds will assist the SPD in obtaining two mobile radar units. “We qualify for this grant every year,” Police Chief Joe Aikens said. “They pay us up to 50 percent of the costs of the radar units for us and then we actually get a pretty substantial discount by purchasing it through the state.” The radar equipment is fitted into the department’s patrol units, Aikens said. “It...

    Firefighters from Gurley, Sidney, Dalton and Potter, as well as the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, responded to a fire Wednesday in the northeast area of the former Sioux Army Depot ordinance igloos. Upon arrival, fire crews knocked down flames that had spread from a burning pile of wood chips into surrounding grass.     Inez C. Williams, 80, longtime resident of Colorado Springs and former Potter resident, passed away on March 1, 2017. She was born April 26, 1936, to Raymond H. and Violet F. Wiekhorst (Edelman) in Potter, Nebraska. She had very fond memories of being raised on her family wheat farm and helping with farm animals.     In some ways Sidney is like a homecoming for Patrick Kilbride, the new golf operations director for the city of Sidney. Kilbride, a 25-year golf industry veteran, formerly managed two other Nebraska golf courses, Prairie Club at Valentine and Dismal River at Mullen.
