  • Smart's 'Shot' still a hot topic, 26 years later

    Associated Press|Mar 28, 2013

WASHINGTON — No list of great NCAA championship game moments is complete unless Keith Smart’s jumper for Indiana in 1987 is on it. Known by Hoosiers fans to this day as “The Shot,” and known in much less complimentary terms by Syracuse faithful, that 16-foot jumper from the left side with 5 seconds to play is a film clip staple throughout March. The memory of “The Shot,” which gave Indiana a 74-73 victory, is still with Smart, now the coach of the Sacramento Kings, while Jim Boeheim, still the coach at Syracuse, revisited it every day for 16...

  • U.S. launches new batch of graphic anti-smoking ads

    Associated Press|Mar 28, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — Government health officials launched the second round of a graphic ad campaign Thursday that is designed to get smokers off tobacco, saying they believe the last effort convinced tens of thousands to quit. The ads feature sad, real-life stories: There is Terrie, a North Carolina woman who lost her voice box. Bill, a diabetic smoker from Michigan who lost his leg. And Aden, a 7-year-old boy from New York, who has asthma attacks from secondhand smoke. “Most smokers want to quit. These ads encourage them to try,” said Dr. Tom F...

  • Gun control backers struggle to win some Dems

    Associated Press|Mar 28, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — It would seem a lobbyist’s dream: rounding up votes for a proposal backed by more than 8 in 10 people in polls. Yet gun control supporters are struggling to win over moderate Democrats in their drive to push expanded background checks for firearms purchasers through the Senate next month. Backed by a $12 million TV advertising campaign financed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, gun control groups scheduled rallies around the country Thursday aimed at pressuring senators to back the effort. President Barack Obama was mee...

  • However court rules, gay marriage debate won't end

    Associated Press|Mar 28, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — However the Supreme Court rules after its landmark hearings on same-sex marriage, the issue seems certain to divide Americans and states for many years to come. In oral arguments Tuesday and Wednesday on two cases involving gay couples’ rights, the justices left open multiple options for rulings that are expected in June. But they signaled there was no prospect of imposing a 50-state solution at this stage. With nine states now allowing same-sex marriages and other states banning them via statutes or constitutional amendments, t...

  • Heat's win streak finished at 27 games

    Associated Press|Mar 28, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) — The streak is over. The big prize is still out there. That’s what mattered most to LeBron James and the Miami Heat. The Heat’s bid for NBA history ended Wednesday night when their 27-game winning streak was snapped by the Chicago Bulls 101-97, setting off a raucous celebration inside United Center. Miami finished six shy of the 33-game record held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. With 11 games remaining, there’s no time for Miami to take another shot at the record. A big run...

  • Bulldogs fall apart late in lop-sided loss

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Mar 28, 2013

PEETZ, Colo. — For four innings Wednesday afternoon, the Peetz High School baseball Bulldogs were locked in a tight scrum with visiting Caliche. Then along came a fifth-inning meltdown that repeated itself twice more. Batting around in each of the final three innings and scoring 14 unanswered runs — fueled by numerous wild pitches, errors and passed balls — the visiting Buffaloes turned a one-run deficit into an easy 16-3 victory. Peetz (1-2) held a 1-0 lead after an inning when John Ommen slice...

  • Retirement, succession plans: 'Must haves' for business owners

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Mar 28, 2013

If you own a business, you may well follow a “do it now” philosophy – which is, of course, necessary to keep things running smoothly. Still, you also need to think about tomorrow – which means you’ll want to take action on your own retirement and business succession plans. Fortunately, you’ve got some attractive options in these areas. For example, you could choose a retirement plan that offers at least two key advantages: potential tax-deferred earnings and a wide array of investment options. Plus, some retirement plans allow you to make tax...

  • Celebrate the converts to marriage equality

    Connie Schultz, Syndicated Columnist|Mar 28, 2013

My friendship with Jackie Cassara began over lunch in 1992, after she announced that she was gay as if it were a warning. We had spoken over the phone a few times for a story about one of her colleagues. Jackie and I were both working mothers with young children. Our conversations were lively and fun and constantly veering off topic. After my story ran, we agreed to meet in person. What I didn’t know at the time was that Jackie had only recently started coming out to friends and families. Reactions had been mixed, sometimes painful, and she d...

    William H Benson, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Mar 28, 2013

On March 19, 2003, President George W. Bush ordered General Tommy Franks to invade Iraq. That day jets rained down bombs on military targets in Baghdad, and the next day the land troops marched into Iraq. Last week marked the invasion’s 10-year anniversary. In the war’s run-up, Bush had sought and received Congress’s vote of support, but, according to Kofi Annan, the U.S. president had “bypassed the UN Security Council and violated the United Nations founding charter.” The world’s nations opp...
