  • Across the Fence: The Cholera Corridor

    M. Timothy Nolting|Mar 28, 2014

Among the many causes of casualties that afflicted the flood of immigrants along the California, Oregon and Mormon trails, death by the so-called "savages of the plains" rank as the least deadly. In fact, it is said that the nearly 350,000 pioneers from 1841 to 1866 would have had a greater risk of accidental or premature death if they had stayed at home than at the hands of Indians. History tends to treat the brutal deaths of helpless travelers with far greater journalistic sensationalism than...

He set him free from the suffering of death. It wasn’t...

  • That'll leave a mark

Jeff Parsons, Columnist - Baseball by the Book|Mar 28, 2014

In a spring training game between the Reds and the Indians, official Brad Meyers took a line drive shot right in the bucket while working the infield. It’s a place we guys can only describe as … OOOHHHHH! Chills run down my spine just thinking of the moment, captured on video for all to see. Normally, you will see two umpires working a game—one behind the plate and the other in the field. The field umpire shifts to various positions within the baselines in order to make a call. Since there is an official in the infield, the rule book clearly de...
