    Potter-Dix Jr./Sr. High School once again had a strong showing at the Nebraska School Activities Association's (NSAA) State Speech Championship, held last week at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, coming away with the 2016 Class D2 State Champion title and six students placing in the top six in their events.     Vernon L. VerMaas, 88 of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, March 27, 2016, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home Assisted Living facility in Scottsbluff. At his request, cremation has taken place at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Home Crematory. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at the First Christian Church in Sidney with Dr. Curtiss P. Davis, Pastor officiating.     Charles Eugene Nelson, 71 of Omaha, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Charlie was born in North Platte on Dec. 2, 1944, to Oscar and Mildred (Lehl) Nelson. Charlie attended school in Ogallala and graduated with the class of 1963. He furthered his education at McCook Community College where he played basketball. He received his degree in education at Kearney State College and then pursued his master’s degree at Northern Colorado College in Greeley, Colo.
