    LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska’s rural communities received nearly $190 million in USDA Rural Development funding in federal fiscal year 2014, completed on September 30. In five years, USDA has invested nearly $1.5 billion in Nebraska, according to Rural Development State Director Maxine Moul. In the 19-year history of the agency, the funding total is nearly $2.7 billion in Nebraska.   • Sidney school board re-elects Von Seggern as president

    The Sidney School board members met on Monday night to appoint the board and committees for 2015. Tom Von Seggern was re-elected again as board president and Steve Mattoon was reappointed as the vice president. Randall Flamig, Doug Means, Randy Miller, Janet Rosenbaum, Superintendent Jay Ehler and Secretary Deanna Kantor also all remained on the board.   • Area robotics teams get together for tournament in Sidney

    Legos, robotics, and friendly competition met in West Elementary School on Saturday in the form of a robotics tournament. Sidney hosted its first 4-H Lego League Tournament for fourth- to eight-graders. Ten teams, involving 85 students from the panhandle, participated in the tournament.     The first baby of the year at Sidney Regional Medical Center was born on Friday, Jan, 9, 2015, at 3:32 a.m. Heather and Oscar Gomez welcomed a baby girl, Emya (pronounced Em-eye-ya). She weighed 6 lbs, 12 oz. and was 19.5 inches long.     Dear Editor, We are starting a new year and our council will be working on the new water park. I would like to remind council that back in November 2012, the voters voted for a ½-cent sales tax to help pay for our deteriorating streets, a new swimming pool and to upgrade the golf course. The golf course has already spent their share of the tax money plus. Now, council wants to build a water park.
