  • Just for Kix

    For The Sun-Telegraph|May 8, 2014

Over 150 dancers performed for a packed crowd at the Sidney Middle School gym last Sunday. The highlight every year are the Father/Daughter routines that close out the show. The fathers even tried a few high kicks. Some 200 dancers performed in three separate routines (preschool, K- 3 and 4th – 12th). Most danced with their dads but brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, family friends and step-dads made great partners, too. Several awards were given out to the four seniors, 5-year dancers, 1...

    Caitlin Sievers|May 8, 2014

When Gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts stopped in Sidney on Wednesday during an extensive trip of Western Nebraska ahead of next week’s primary, he spoke about the need to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with something better. “What we have to do fundamentally at state government is reform HHS,” Ricketts said. “So we do a better job of delivering our services. • Peterson pledges not to use AG office for political gain

    Dave Faries|May 8, 2014

A bit of disillusionment drives Doug Peterson’s campaign for the attorney general’s office. “I was a little frustrated over the years seeing the office utilized for personal political gain,” he explained. “When you serve the state of Nebraska, you have to be focused on what’s in the best interest of the state. There’s potential to be distracted if you factor in personal political ambition.” Early on in his campaign, Peterson issued a public pledge not to seek another office during his term as attorney general, should he win. He also shies away...

  • In final visit to Sidney before primary, Dinsdale stresses repeal of ACA

    Caitlin Sievers|May 8, 2014

U.S. Senate candidate Sid Dinsdale believes repeal of the Affordable Care Act to be replaced by personal accountability is the answer to healthcare woes in the United States. "I think it's going to take a group of people from the healthcare fields along with regular citizens to study what would be the best alternative," Dinsdale said. Dindale is a board member for Methodist Health Systems, a holding company with three hospitals in Omaha and 5,500 employees. "It's never been about access," Dinsdale said. "Some people come to the emergency room,...

    William H. Benson, Columnist|May 8, 2014

On Tuesday, April Fools’ Day, several dozen Dartmouth students gathered in the office belonging to the university’s president, Philip J. Hanlon, and insisted that he respond to each of the items listed on their Freedom Budget. The students demanded a faculty that included more women and minorities, gender-neutral housing and restrooms, and harsher penalties for sexual assaults. In their Freedom Budget, they wrote, “We seek to eradicate the systems of oppression” that exist on the Dartmou...

  • Tales of a coffee-holic: Cut moms some slack

    Caitlin Sievers|May 8, 2014

I think we place a little too much pressure on our mothers to be perfect. Especially as children, we look to our moms as a source of not only basic care so we can survive into adulthood, but also to nurture every facet of our being so we can grow into well rounded, successful individuals. As children we expect the world from our mothers. They can make everything better with a kiss and are the main source of comfort to our small lives. And even though our mothers obviously brought this burden upon themselves, that’s a lot of pressure to put o...

  • Letter to the Editor: Be a community hero

    Will Castner|May 8, 2014

A hero is defined as “a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for their brave deeds and noble qualities.” In my experience canvassing for the bond campaign, I think we have opportunity for many of our citizens to become heroes. Recently an issue has developed that is in the front of everyone’s mind, the school bond campaign to build a new K-4 elementary school. As you go to the election polls next Tuesday, May 13, I encourage you to vote yes and be a community hero. I encourage you to vote for a better education for the stude...

  • Talking Sports: Book learning

    Stephen McKay|May 8, 2014

“What a stupid I am.” That’s what Roberto De Vicenzo said after the 1968 Masters Tournament. “I’m such an idiot.” The words of Phil Mickelson following the 2006 U.S. Open. I don’t remember what Colin Montgomery said after his final round that year. Nor do I remember what Jean Van de Velde said after the 1999 Open Championship. But they were stand-up guys at least, I remember that. But for the first 13 and most of the past four years I’ve played golf all my life. Most of that golf has been recreational. But I’ve played enough competitive golf...
