    Sidney's 2013-14 budget is so dense, the City Council had to first weigh when to discuss the matter before turning to the actual details. At the council's May 27 meeting City Manager Gary Person said that this budget is going to have “a lot of pretty major projects already incorporated into it. Some carry over from this year, then those major projects we have to plan for.   • Antique tractors relaying through Sidney

    On Saturday June 1, the Nebraska Antique Farming Association will take part in the 100-year celebration of the nations first coast-to-coast highway. Starting in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. they will follow the Lincoln Highway to Missouri Valley, Iowa traveling through Sidney on Saturday and stopping for the night. The tractor’s trek will start at 7 a.m. in Pine Bluffs and make its way to Sidney by 6 p.m. With a police escort through downtown Sidney, the tractors will make their way to Cabela’s then to the Tourism office's log cabin.   • Proposal to form new tax committee moves forward

    LINCOLN -- A legislative committee would be formed to study the tax system in Nebraska under a resolution advanced by lawmakers Thursday. LR155, introduced by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, would create the Tax Modernization Committee to examine the state’s tax structure and submit recommendations to the governor and the Executive Board of the Legislature by December of this year. Chambers said the committee would look at sales, income, property and other taxes and solicit input from the public to determine the best tax structure for the state....

  • Neighbors, Wheat Belt Staff Rescue Trapped Dogs

    Two Big Springs’ dogs recent "walk about" nearly ended in disaster. The dogs were reunited with their family after four days thanks to caring neighbors, Sam and Doug Rose and Wheat Belt Oshkosh area foreman, Kevin Coss. Late Thursday afternoon, a concerned neighbor and Wheat Belt customer contacted the Wheat Belt office. Sam Rose noticed two dogs in the Big Springs Substation while farming nearby.     Two national "sports" stories caught my attention this past week. The first was news that 10 members of Congress have urged the Washington Redskins to change their name. The second was a minor Internet and national news-dust up taking offense at Mets broadcaster Ketih Hernandez referring to a broken bat by the common cliche, "dead soldier" - on Memorial Day no less.
