  • Program addresses use of upper floors in downtown

    Dawn Graves|Sep 12, 2014

The dark, empty windows seen above many of Sidney's downtown businesses are often the only reminder of those forgotten, vacant spaces. As the city of Sidney continues to develop, beautify and preserve its historic downtown district, the vacant upper floors around town are gaining attention for untapped development opportunities they present. To help citizens get a working knowledge of how to develop strategies to increase upper floor use in Sidney's downtown, the city is sponsoring a workshop ne...

    Dawn Graves|Sep 12, 2014

City Council has approved a $45.8 million budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year. This is an $8.5 million increase over last year’s budget and includes major street projects totaling $12.5 million, a new swimming pool costing more than $4 million and park improvements running about $2 million. “This budget accomplishes a lot,” City Manager Gary Person told the council on Tuesday night. “(It’s) a lot of things that you wanted to see done.” The property tax levy request of $1.93 million for the next fiscal year is slightly higher than last year’s...

  • Across The Fence: Deserters or outcasts: Three who left (Part II)

    M. Timothy Nolting|Sep 12, 2014

On May 24, 1869, Maj. John Wesley Powell – along with nine other adventurous men – launched four specially designed boats into the waters of the Green River and began a four-month long expedition into the unexplored Grand Canyon. Sixteen days into the journey, the most serious mishap of the entire expedition occurred. Oramel Howland – piloting one of the four boats, "No Name" – missed Powell's command to go ashore and was caught up in a series of violent rapids that resulted in the destruc...

  • Good Old Days 09-12-14

    Sep 12, 2014

Compiled By The Sidney Sun-Telegraph Staff These stories from the past first appeared in The Sidney Telegraph. Original writing is preserved, though some stories were shortened for space reasons. 100 years ago Sept. 12, 1914 'Flying Bullets Going Very Fast. They Leave Air Waves And Eddies Behind Them.' If a photograph of a speeding bullet could be taken the print would probably show a space like a body of water marked by what looked like speeding water bugs, each leaving a ripple in its wake....

  • Incredible love

Jan Knicely, Associate In Ministry Emeritus Holy Trinity Lutheran Sidney|Sep 12, 2014

Recently, we were blessed with the birth of our 13th great-grandchild … a sweet little baby girl. We have not yet met her nor will we be able to see her anytime soon. Distance makes it very difficult. Yet, in spite of the distance, our hearts are full of love for her and we know so much about her through pictures and updates from her parents and grandparents. However, at this stage of her life, she has no idea how much she is loved by us. Our prayer is that someday she will know us and love us in return. This reminded me of a quote by author R...

  • Letter to the Editor: West Nile Virus

    C.J. Cornelius M.D. of Sidney|Sep 12, 2014

Dear Editor, West Nile Virus just robbed our community of one of its finest citizens. We all have heard the admonition “protect yourself from mosquitos particularly in the evening hours,” but since West Nile is fairly uncommon, we tend to discount that advice until something like this gets our attention. Few cases of West Nile have been reported in the Panhandle and the symptoms are similar to a cold or flu at the onset so we tend to get careless. The onset of a freeze in the weather will soon end the life of the lowly mosquito, but a wet spr... Full story

  • Sidney to take on Karloff, Tigers tonight in Hastings

    Will Korn|Sep 12, 2014

After rolling in its first two games of the year, the Sidney High School football team expects to be tested this week on both sides of the ball as they travel Friday night to face Hastings. Sidney (2-0) has outscored its opponents 91-6 this fall. Kickoff against the Tigers (1-1) is 6 p.m. MDT. The game will air on 1340 AM. This game figures to be a challenging task for Sidney, especially on the road about four hours from home. But Sidney head coach Todd Ekart is confident that his team is up to the task and is prepared to play its style of...

  • Lady Raiders dominate from start, sweep Sutherland

    Will Korn|Sep 12, 2014

The Sidney High volleyball team spiked its way to a dominant sweep Thursday night of the Sutherland Sailors at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. Sidney won by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-6. With the win in their first home game of the season, the Lady Raiders moved to 2-2 and have recovered nicely after being swept by North Platte and Ogallala last week. For Sidney head coach Sarah Wilson, strong team play was a major factor in the convincing victory. "I was mostly proud of how well the girls...
