  • County schedules public meeting on SRMC bond issue

    Caitlin Sievers|Jul 8, 2014

The Cheyenne County commissioners will hold a meeting in August to inform the public about Sidney Regional Medical Center’s request for the county to issue $10 million in revenue bonds on its behalf to help pay for the new hospital’s construction. While the county agreed to hold the meeting on August 4 as part of its regular board session, the commissioners were still skeptical about some aspects of the bond issuance. Since the hospital’s initial proposal at the board’s previous meeting, the county hired its own bond attorney at the...

  • Area wheat producers hear update on UNL research

    Dave Ostdiek|Jul 8, 2014

Damage from the wheat streak mosaic virus costs wheat growers a lot of money in western Nebraska and other wheat-growing regions of the High Plains. How do environmental conditions affect the spread of the virus and the risk of disease? Answering that question is one of the objectives of a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant project that is funding research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln High Plains Ag Lab (HPAL) near Sidney and other wheat-producing areas. One of the goals of the USDA...

  • From the editor: Once a decision is made

    Dave Faries|Jul 8, 2014

Moments after the Supreme Court published its Hobby Lobby decision, a friend of mine posted a telling criticism on Facebook. “Thank you SCOTUS,” he wrote. “As a Hindu, I will now opt out of any Health Department requirement to exterminate.” My friend is not, so far as I know, a religious person. He does, however, own a couple of restaurants in Dallas. Across town, there is—or at least was, it’s been awhile since I’ve paid any notice to that city’s dining trends—a popular venue run out of a Hare Krishna temple. OK, it may have...

  • Thinking about health - Quiz of the day: Will next year's insurance rates go up or down?

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Jul 8, 2014

It’s now the silly season for insurance rates with government agencies, consulting groups, and the media all speculating about next year’s premiums. Will your insurance premiums go up or down this fall? Never before have I seen such intense interest in insurance rates which editors have usually considered a snoozer of a story. It’s no wonder, though, that insurance rates are hot news. They’ve become as politicized as the Affordable Care Act itself. Supporters of Obamacare have focused on what people pay for health coverage—remember...
