Over the course of three days, two semi trucks were involved in separate single-vehicle crashes on Interstate 80 near Sidney. Because the incident occurred in a construction zone where east- and wes...

  • Letter To The Editor: State's oil and gas industry has started to take spotlight

Mike Carr, President Nebraska Petroleum Producers Association|Aug 24, 2015

Dear Editor: Until this year, Nebraska’s home-grown oil and gas industry has been largely out of sight and out of mind of the public and state policymakers, and for good reason. Nebraska operators are small oil and gas companies, not giant oil companies. We are a well-regulated industry that contributes significantly to the rural economies of southwest Nebraska and the Panhandle. Ever since Nebraska’s first long-term producing oil well was drilled in Richardson County in the 1940s, Nebraska producers have been generating income for inv... Full story

  • No Till Notes: 'Surgery has been put on hold'

Mark Watson, Panhandle No till Educator|Aug 24, 2015

My knee replacement surgery has been put on hold. I developed a bacterial lung infection prior to surgery. My doctor put me on antibiotics for a period of five days that lowered my white blood cell count, but not to normal levels. I then took another 10 days of antibiotics and I’m scheduled to go back in for more tests soon to see if I’m healthy enough for surgery. It turned out to be a blessing that my surgery was postponed as my son Jacob, who works on the farm with us, was diagnosed with pneumonia. There appears to be an unusually high incid...
