  • Wait and see attitude as fall harvest approaches

    Shannon Ireland|Sep 9, 2013

With the fall harvest just around the corner, many are wondering what farmers are anticipating. The yields depend on when the crops were planted, but overall, this year will yield a good harvest for corn, millet and wheat. However, wheat crops are significantly below average, but the Crossroads Co-op refused to expand on that detail. Due to multiple hailstorms, a few farmers had fields wiped out, causing some fields to look healthier than others. The summer heat had an effect on the crops. “The heat didn’t help,” said Logan Snyder from Scoul...

  • Back on course

    Caitlin Sievers|Sep 9, 2013

After receiving only one bid during the first attempt to contract out work on the city's golf course irrigation project earlier this summer, the city's second effort went much more smoothly. "There was far more competition in bidding," City Manager Gary Person said. Sidney contracted with Staples Golf Design to design, plan and coordinate the irrigation project for improvements to the municipal golf course. Project One, a project management firm, is coordinating with Staples on the plan. Although the project initially only received interest... Full story

    Stephen McKay|Sep 9, 2013

The Sidney Red Raiders golf team defeated McCook on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the North Platte Invite Friday. Katelin Cole (97) and Jessica Campbell (98) rounded out the Raiders top four. Sophomore Rachel Blauert competed in her first varsity match of the year and finished with a 101. • Sidney silences Holdrege, 44-13

    Stephen McKay|Sep 9, 2013

After their long journey to another time zone, the Sidney gridders found what they knew must have been awaiting them in this far off and hostile place. The Red Raiders arrived at Keifer Field to find an enthusiastic crowd cheering wildly for the opposing Holdrege Dusters. And if the pro Holdrege crowd was not enough of a challenge, perhaps the oppressive heat would be. If it has ever really been hot enough to fry and egg on the sidewalk, Friday would have been such a day. With temperatures well...

  • Potter-Dix stumbles in Garden County encounter

    Stephen McKay|Sep 9, 2013

The Coyotes could not stop, could not contain Garden County running back Tristen Jackson Friday night. He carried for 203 yards and two touchdowns, leading a backfield that rushed for more than 300 yards against the usually stingy Potter-Dix defense. "We didn't play to our potential," said Bryant Knigge. "We got crushed." The Eagles jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead, eventually claiming a 58-12 victory in Oshkosh. In the wake of Friday night's loss, Potter-Dix coaches and players spoke of...

  • Cox, Bulldogs chew up North Park

    Stephen McKay|Sep 9, 2013

Perhaps there is something about the oppressive heat that brings out the bulldog in the Peetz football team. Though Peetz's Garrin Cox wasn't exactly gnarling like a rabid canine, he played as if so possessed. Before five minutes had elapsed in the first quater, Cox scored three touchdowns, including two on defense. That was more than the visitors would tally the entire game. When all the numbers were finally added up, Peetz advanced its record to 2-0 with a 61-14 pasting of the North Park... Full story

  • Warriors 'Cruise' to 64-6 win at South Platte

    Dave Faries|Sep 9, 2013

A.W. Frerichs and Brennen Cruise set the tone early. On the very first play from scrimmage Friday at South Platte, Leyton’s quarterback-receiver combination hooked up for a 49 yard touchdown. “I was supposed to run an out, but the middle opened up,” Cruise explained. Instead of his assigned pattern, Cruise ran a post. Frerichs spotted the wide open receiver and made a quick decision. “I just let her go,” the quarterback said. “It worked out.” A lot worked out for Leyton on the way to their seco... Full story

  • Wallace blanks injury-weakened Storm

    Dave Faries|Sep 9, 2013

The young Creek Valley Storm visited the Wallace Wildcats for a Friday matinee and came out on the short end of 76-0 final. Because of the afternoon start, the temperature at kickoff was 106 degrees. With two starters not able to play, freshman Maverick Widdowson was pressed into full time service at quarterback. Dane McConnell was out with an injury. Keegan Michel also did not suit up. "It was the first time (Widdowson) was really hit hard in a game," said Storm Head Coach Todd Westover. "He took some lumps, but he continued to play hard."...
