  • Eve of Destruction

    Mike Sunderland, Thoughts from a Grey-haired Point of View|Oct 6, 2021

During the 1960’s Barry McGuire sang a rather bleak soul-shaking song called the Eve of Destruction. In it he lists various reasons why he believed the world was on the brink of destruction. Among the reasons he listed were such things that was (and still is) going on in the Middle East, the threat of nuclear war, the hate in Red China, and the general increase of violence in the U.S. and the world in general. Most of my generation was relatively familiar with the song as virtually every r...

  • Straight Talk from Steve

    Steve Erdman, 47th District Senator|Oct 6, 2021

The special session of the Nebraska Legislature for redistricting has now ended. The last three weeks of September have been filled with the most intense negotiations I have ever been a part of. Nevertheless, we now have new district maps which will apply for the next ten years. It was very important for the Legislature to meet the September 30th deadline. Had we not passed this redistricting legislation in September, it would have had to wait until we could revisit it in January. Revisiting...

  • Congress - Don't give the IRS access to consumers' bank accounts

    Oct 6, 2021

Credit unions and banks across the country are jointly opposed to an item being considered as part of the proposed $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. The bill may include a provision requiring credit unions and banks report to the IRS the account transactions (deposits or withdrawals) of accounts that hold more than $600. What does this mean for you, the consumer? An invasion of your privacy and potential additional taxes. This proposed fishing expedition is bad for consumers. The proposal states that if your account balance is above $600 at...

  • What does retirement security mean to you?

    Oct 6, 2021

October is National Retirement Security Month. But what does retirement security mean to you? And how can you work toward achieving it? Here are some suggestions: • Build your resources. While you’re working, save in tax-advantaged accounts such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. In your 401(k), contribute at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. Remember, especially early in your career, time is often your biggest asset...

  • The Universality of the Lord's Prayer

    Oct 6, 2021

The most popular prayer that human societies have ever uttered during the past twenty centuries is undoubtedly the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples, ‘Our Father’, which is otherwise called ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. Anyone going to the holy land will get to visit the Church of Pater Noster (Our Father), the place where Jesus is believed to have taught this beautiful prayer. One thing that strikes our minds when we are at this place is the common heritage, communion and fellowship that is expressed by people who reach here. It is manifest...

  • PANHANDLE PERSPECTIVES:

Dipak Santra, Alternative Crops Breeding Specialist|Oct 6, 2021

Can winter field peas, planted in September and harvested the middle of the following summer (like winter wheat), work as part of the dryland cropping rotations in the Nebraska Panhandle? The question is being studied by the alternative crops breeding program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff. Incorporating winter pea into a wheat-based dryland crop production system in the Panhandle has the potential to increase the crop production sustainability and economic viability of dryland...

    Oct 6, 2021

LINCOLN – Nebraska Farm Bureau is asking Nebraska’s three House members to support the Senate passed version of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act when it comes to the House floor for a vote. “Whether it’s good roads to move crops and livestock from our fields, pastures, and feedlots to market, or subsequently moving agriculture commodities and products to ports for transport to international customers, infrastructure is critical to Nebraska farm and ranch families. That’s why Nebraska Farm Bureau is a long-time supporter of investing i...

  • Understanding the Shortages?

    Dan Carlson, Prairie Ponderings|Oct 6, 2021

Perhaps you, like me, have gone shopping for a specific product recently, only to learn the store was out of stock with no indication as to when replenishment would take place. This is becoming commonplace across the U.S. and, while for most of us it’s a minor inconvenience, on a national and global scale it’s potentially catastrophic. My life can go on pretty much as normal without the brand of flavored bottled tea I enjoy. For a factory making a product that depends on a certain raw mat...

The number 2 ranked D-6 Potter-Dix Coyotes remain unbeaten as they had no trouble defeating the visiting South Platte Blue Knights 70-to-6 on Homecoming Night in Potter on Friday. Peetz's Bulldog Football team traveled to North Park for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Wildcats, and were unable to recover from a slow start and fell by a final score of 69-to-19.
