  • Alleged victim takes the stand in Makris trial

    Caitlin Sievers|Oct 10, 2013

In day three of the State vs. George Makris, the courtroom was tense as the 12-year-old alleged sexual assault victim took the stand to testify about her reported abuse. Makris was charged last summer with first degree sexual assault of a child and third degree sexual assault of a child, both felonies. The defendant is accused of touching his female minor relative in inappropriate ways over the course of multiple years. During her testimony in Cheyenne County District Court, the alleged victim said she stayed in Sidney frequently in the past... Full story

  • Life in the fast lane

    Dave Faries|Oct 10, 2013

Fierce rivalry, diverse personalities and the sort of danger that causes the average person to burrow into the safety of cubicles and suburban homes—it’s the stuff that ancient storytellers and Hollywood filmmakers feed on. When all of those elements are found in auto racing, however, Hollywood tends to cower from the inherent drama and find only caricature. The film capital has turned the ethos that compels someone to slide behind the wheel of a monster on asphalt into farce, such as “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" or the hilarious “Tall...

  • Time and place

    Oct 10, 2013

Next week I'll officially be in my late 20s. Hopefully my face doesn't fall off and I won't soon have to seek help with basic everyday tasks. Just joking folks, as a former caregiver to the elderly I know 26 isn't actually that old, but it'll be the oldest I've ever been. Many people my age might lament the passage of time or look back on high school with fondness. Not this girl. Although I am starting to feel the ravages of time in some aspects of my life, I generally find my mid-20s to be a positive time. I used to be able to drink all night... Full story

    Stephen McKay|Oct 10, 2013

Though six games have already been played on the high school gridiron this season, teams in District B8 open a new season, of a sort, Friday night. For the Sidney Red Raiders, that new season begins in Alliance (3-3) as district play kicks off at 7 p.m. After their date with the Bulldogs, two more district contests will come in the weeks to follow. Sidney will keep to the road to meet the other Bulldogs in Gering on Oct. 18. Should the Raiders (3-3) take care of business the next two weeks away from home, the meeting at Weymouth Field against... Full story

  • Seeing red, again

    Stephen McKay|Oct 10, 2013

A few months ago I addressed the issue of the Washington Redskins name. It's been around a long time so of course it's still here. Here's a news flash: It will be here until Redskins owner Daniel Snyder or his successor changes the name. Sooner or later there will be capitulation. Since Snyder has his heels dug in, it's likely to be later than sooner. The issue will continue to fester until Ogallala High School (Indians) and Leyton High School (Warriors) are brought to their knees. My view of the matter those several months ago was, in a...

  • 2013 Health Center Foundation's Fall Soup/Chili Bazaar

    Shannon Ireland|Oct 10, 2013

The 2013 Health Center Foundation's Fall Soup/Chili Bazaar was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Elks Lodge. This was the fourth consecutive year for the HCF putting on the event. Beta Sigma Phi sorority has each of it's members create a gallon of chili, which are then blended together to serve as one at the Bazaar. "It's a fabulous blend of chili," said Evie Parsons, marketing and PR director at the hospital. Each year is different than the last, but the event always serves hundreds in the...
