  • Reprehensible

    Dan Carlson, Columnist Prairie Ponderings|Oct 14, 2020

I spent nearly half my life working in TV and radio newsrooms. Much of that time was spent working as a weatherman, but often I was tasked with double duty. Over the years I worked as a producer, news anchor, news reporter and news director in addition to weather responsibilities. This shows you I’m qualified to evaluate and comment about news broadcasting in America. My journalism professor at the University of Minnesota taught us as the last of a dying breed. He defined the role of a j...

  • Fond Memories

Forrest Hershberger, View From The Handlebars|Oct 14, 2020

There are some experiences in life that never fully get filed away in the caverns of memory. They have a way of always staying near to the top. Compare them to the worn-out hiking boots or jeans your wife wants you to throw away. That event is so deep in the past you should be blowing dust off the book cover. Nevertheless, it is a memory that brings back a smile like it happened this morning. Dads have a way of stockpiling those memories. Some of those memories are reflections of previous...

  • West Bank Settlements

    Bill Benson, columnist|Oct 14, 2020

In June of 1967, Israel’s army captured the Sinai and Gaza Strip from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and East Jerusalem and the West Bank from the Jordanians. Although Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt in 1982, after brokering a deal with Egypt’s Anwar Sadat, “its occupation of the rest of the territory seized in 1967 is ongoing.” The West Bank is a landlocked strip of land, 2,263 square miles, sandwiched between Jordan to the east, and Israel to the north, west, and south. It is the geog...

  • The Truth

Doug Birky, Evangelical Free Church Pastor|Oct 14, 2020

We have probably all heard this joke which some people like to tell with different variations: How do you know when a politician is lying? How do you know when an attorney is lying? How do you know when a used car salesman is lying? How do you know when a cable news reporter is lying? Etc. The answer: When they open their mouths. Ha, ha, ha! I apologize for this “cheap shot” joke which makes fun of some honorable professions. However, it does remind us that people often feel taken advantage of, deceived, or lied to in life. This, in turn, can...

  • The Camping Trip

Jake Gillham, Son of the Cowboy|Oct 14, 2020

Several years ago (before the two youngest ‘pokes were even on the scene), my mama and dad thought it would serve us well to go to Red Feather Lakes for a camping adventure. We ‘pokes applauded this idea heartily. This was practically a boy’s dream! Exploring the forest, sleeping in tents, chasing thieves, starting fires, and hunting moose and bears were all on our agenda. A boy’s plan rarely is thought through beforehand, and usually when an idea occurs, we implement it immediately. Our family...

    Oct 14, 2020

These findings are similar to the 2010 survey. Four in 10 rural Nebraskans surveyed sai...

Creek Valley’s Storm Football team hosted the Arthur County Wolves Friday night to cap Homecoming Week in Chappell, and the highly-anticipated matchup against the two 4-and-1 D6 rivals drew a large crowd for the game. Arthur County started the game on offense, and after moving the...
