    Several local artists attended the "Discover 2015 Art Show" reception at the Sidney Public Library Monday evening. The Cheyenne County Art Guild hosted the event. The top 25 artworks of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) Annual Conference will be displayed through Nov. 30 and will continue to travel across the state.   • Sidney schools continue to improve on state tests

    The Sidney Public School District exceeded state averages last year on tests administered to students throughout Nebraska. According to the State of the Schools Report released by the Nebraska Department of Education, 83 percent of Sidney students tested exceeded or met proficiency standards in reading, 78 percent in mathematics, 85 percent in science and 80 percent in writing. In addition to scoring above statewide averages, more Sidney students scored as meeting or exceeding proficiency in reading, science and writing than the previous year....

    Elmer I. Jung, 84 of Potter, passed away at the Golden Living Center in Sidney, Saturday evening, Nov. 7, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 12 in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Potter Volunteer Fire Department or to the church.     The following people appeared in Cheyenne County District Court on Nov. 4 before the Honorable Derek Weimer: Daniel Gonzalez, 39, of Sidney, appeared for a status hearing on two counts of possession of methamphetamines, which are both Class IV felonies. Status hearings were continued to 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 4. Valente Acosta-Simental, 54, of Sidney, appeared for arraignment on a charge of distribution of methamphetamines, which is a Class II felony.   • Gamble wins grand champion artist in Wheat Belt contest

    A Leyton Public Schools third grader won the grand champion artist award in the Wheat Belt cover page contest. Shawnee Gamble received the honor and the artwork will be displayed on the cover of the Wheat Belt connection insert in December. The reserve champion artist was Axi Benish.
