  • Ehler hits 9 threes in game; Fever sweep tourney

    Apr 23, 2013

When Paxton Ehler finds his touch on the basketball court, the opposition generally suffers. At last weekend’s AAU Mile High Super Regional, the Sidney High School product averaged 15 points per game during the tournament, leading the Rocky Mountain Fever to the championship. In one contest he punished the Colorado Crusaders with nine three-pointers, personally tacking 29 on the board in a 73-37 romp. Ehler and the Fever outpaced the field throughout the three day event. They crushed the Celtics 76-48 in the opener behind Mike Daum’s...

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

Despite uncooperative spring weather the American Legion Post 17 baseball program has already put in some hard work. Legion baseball held about a dozen practices to date, though many have necessarily been held indoors. This past Sunday the squads took advantage of a rare break in the snow storms for an outdoor workout. “Despite the bad weather we’ve managed to be pretty productive nonetheless,” said first-year seniors head coach Tim Herrera. As the team prepares for another season it’s... Full story

  • More rain expected for swollen Midwest rivers

    Associated Press|Apr 23, 2013

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) — Communities in Illinois and Missouri fought Tuesday to hold back surging rivers swollen by days of drenching rain, even as an approaching storm system threatened new downpours. Floodwaters were rising to record levels along the Illinois River in central Illinois; roads and buildings were flooded and riverfront structures were inundated in Peoria Heights. Firefighters feared that if fuel from businesses and vehicles starts to leak, it could spark a fire in areas that could be reached only by boat. “That’s our...

  • Officials: Boston bomb suspect read jihadist sites

    Associated Press|Apr 23, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an ardent reader of jihadist websites and extremist propaganda, U.S. officials said Tuesday, adding another piece to the body of evidence they say suggests the two brothers were motivated by an anti-American, radical version of Islam. As he lay in his hospital bed with a gunshot wound to the throat, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was charged on Monday with carrying out the bombing with his older brother, who died last week in a gunbattle. Tsarnaev could get the death penalty....

  • Knowledge for life: UNL offers spring lawn management advice

    Karen DeBoer, UNL Extension Educator|Apr 23, 2013

We live in a part of the country where it is a challenge to grow things. I have heard that comment many times since moving here 27 years ago. It is true. For example, last summer I had several calls from people about their tomato plants blooming and not setting on fruit. It was just too hot, windy and dry, and the blossoms dried up. When it finally cooled off, they set on fruit, but it was late in the season. The summer of 2011 was wet, if you remember, and we had different problems to deal with. That’s what makes my job as an Extension...

  • No-till Notes: 'Adoption of no-till on irrigated acres'

Mark Watson, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

Thankfully we finally received a blanket of wet snow across our growing region. There is also more snow in the forecast which should help us to recover from the prolonged drought we’ve experienced since last growing season. This welcome moisture will begin to add to our soil moisture profile for the upcoming growing season. The past couple of weeks I’ve shown that no-till crop production on our irrigated acres has many benefits. Economic analysis of no-till crop production has shown no-till to be the least costly production system. No-till...

  • United, we run

Mike Johanns, Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

On Monday, one week after twin blasts rocked the heart of Boston, more than a thousand well-wishers braved the snow and rain in downtown Lincoln for a memorial run to raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon attack. They weren’t the only ones. Communities across the country held runs and other events, picking up the torch for the world class race that was so abruptly stopped by evil. Last week was a difficult week for America. Four lives were cut short in Boston. Nearly 200 others were injured. Many people who have logged countless...

  • From the Editor

    Dave Faries, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

A state senator from New York, Greg Ball, once again cast doubt upon the amount of grey matter lodged in elected heads when he suggested in a tweet that authorities should torture Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the accused Boston Marathon bomber. His timing was impeccable. Almost lost amid the turmoil of a tragic week, the Constitution Project released a damning report. In 560 pages, the Task Force on Detainee Treatment determined it is “indisputable that the U.S. engaged in the practice of torture.” Yeah, I know—we all assumed as much. Then vice... Full story

  • Our view

    Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

Despite demands from the right, the Obama administration yesterday announced that accused Boston Marathon bomber Dhokhar Tsarnaev would not be tried as an enemy combatant. Over the weekend the most vocal of this crowd, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) were joined in a statement by fellow Republicans Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Peter King from New York. They expressed seemingly valid concerns, including the information that might be lost to the protection offered by Miranda rights and the slow pace of criminal... Full story

According to a Notice of Hearing by the Nebraska Board of Parole, Sutton’s ex-husband, Gary Vannatter Sr.,... Full story

  • Recent storms present challenges, fill coffers

    Hannah Van Ree, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

Panhandle residents dealt with road and school closures as best they could during the recent blizzards. But how does the weather affect the city as whole after the snowflakes have gone and the winds have died down? “Storms always cause numerous challenges for the city staff and emergency management personnel, but dealing with the storms is just part of what we do as a city,” said Sidney City Manager Gary Person. “Each storm brings different types of challenges,” he continued....

He'd pleaded no contest to manslaughter after prosecutors lowered the charge from second-degree murder. Cramer was sentenced on May 31, 2006, to 15 to 20 years in prison. Cramer was convicted of kicking and jumping on 30-year-old Tim McGrath up to two dozen times. Cramer was wearing cowboy boots.... Full story
