  • Census: U.S. population growth rising again

    Associated Press|Dec 20, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – America’s population is now increasing a bit faster thanks to an improving economy, but not enough to lift growth above its lowest level since the Great Depression. New 2012 estimates released Thursday by the Census Bureau offer the latest snapshot of the U.S. population, whose growth has slowed dramatically since the recent recession. “After decades of wars, a depression, immigration surges, baby booms, boomlets and busts, we are entering a new era of modest growth,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings Institu...

  • Big Midwestern snowstorm leads to 25-vehicle crash

    Associated Press|Dec 20, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The first widespread snowstorm of the season began a slow crawl across the Midwest on Thursday, creating treacherous driving conditions that, in Iowa, led to a 25-vehicle pileup that killed one person. Drivers were blinded by blowing snow and didn’t see vehicles that had slowed or stopped on Interstate 80 about 60 miles north of Des Moines, state police said. A chain reaction of crashes involving semitrailers and passenger cars closed down a section of the highway. Drivers throughout the Midwest were harried by hea...

  • Steroids loom in major-college football

    Associated Press|Dec 20, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – With steroids easy to buy, testing weak and punishments inconsistent, college football players are packing on significant weight – 30 pounds or more in a single year, sometimes – without drawing much attention from their schools or the NCAA in a sport that earns tens of billions of dollars for teams. Rules vary so widely that, on any given game day, a team with a strict no-steroid policy can face a team whose players have repeatedly tested positive. An investigation by The A...

  • Michael Phelps voted AP male athlete of year

    Associated Press|Dec 20, 2012

(AP) – Now that he’s away from the pool, Michael Phelps can reflect – really reflect – on what he accomplished. Pretty amazing stuff. “It’s kind of nuts to think about everything I’ve gone through,” Phelps said. “I’ve finally had time to myself, to sit back and say, ‘... that really happened?’ It’s kind of shocking at times.” Not that his career needed a capper, but Phelps added one more honor to his staggering list of accomplishments Thursday – The Associated Press male athlete of the year. Phelps edged out LeBron James to win the award...

  • U.S. economy grew at 3.1 percent in summer

    Associated Press|Dec 20, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent over the summer as consumers spent more and state and local governments added to growth for the first time in three years. But the economy is likely slowing in the current quarter. The Commerce Department’s third and final estimate Thursday of growth for the July-September quarter was revised up from its previous estimate of a 2.7 percent annual growth rate. Growth in the third quarter was more than twice the 1.3 percent growth rate in the April-June quarter. But dis...

  • Lower debt levels mean greater investment opportunities

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Dec 20, 2012

In the past few years, Americans have done a pretty good job of whittling down their debt load. If you’re in this group, you may now have a chance to use your lower level of indebtedness to your advantage – by investing for the future. Consider the numbers: In 2007, just before the financial crisis, the country’s household debt service ratio was about 14 percent. (The debt service ratio is the ratio of debt payments, including mortgages and consumer debt, to disposable personal income.) But by 2012, this figure had dipped below 11 perce...

  • Politics and personal responsibility

    Susan Estritch, Syndicated Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., tragedy, every politician who has me on their email list — and there are many, on both sides of the aisle — has been filling my inbox. All of the messages begin with the requisite expression of shock and horror, the business of sending out our hearts and prayers to those who mourn. Then the gun control advocates insist that now is the time for congressional action, and the opponents caution that no legislation is going to stop people (not guns) from killing. Conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg remembers tha...

  • American crisis number one

    William H Benson, Sun-Telegraph Columnist|Dec 20, 2012

By mid-December of 1776, George Washington was despondent. The American War for Independence was not going well. His troops were undisciplined, often bootless, lacked firearms and ammunition, had little access to food and clothing, and faced two well-equipped substantial European armies: the British red-coats, plus their mercenaries from Germany, the hated Hessians. William Howe, the British general, had chased Washington out of New York, had pursued him hotly across the state of New Jersey in...

  • Snowed-in in Sidney; storm closes I-80

    Tina Mines, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 20, 2012

The snowstorm brought more than large flakes to Sidney yesterday; it brought stranded truck drivers from all over the states and a few from Canada after I-80 was shut down by state officials. Some drivers were trying to make their way to unload or pick up in time to be home for Christmas, others were fortunate enough to have their loved one with them as they traveled. So many trucks were forced to stop off and stay by the I-80 interchange that it became a race to see who could find a place to... Full story
