  • Broncos, Peyton Manning await battered Browns

    Associated Press|Dec 22, 2012

BEREA, Ohio – Preparing to play Peyton Manning was challenging enough for the Cleveland Browns even before losing three more starters. Coach Pat Shurmur said Friday that wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, tight end Jordan Cameron and defensive back Tashaun Gipson will not travel to Denver to play the Broncos (11-3). With playoff hopes dashed and a losing season assured, the Browns (5-9) will try to halt Denver’s nine-game winning streak. Going in with a depleted defense isn’t the best way. “It’s definitely not what you hope for, but it seems lik... Full story

  • National Hockey League cancels all games through January 14

    Associated Press|Dec 22, 2012

NEW YORK – The next round of NHL cuts could be the deepest yet. With no deal in sight and no negotiations planned, the NHL chopped another two weeks off the schedule and moved closer to canceling the entire hockey season. No drop-dead date has been announced, but it is clear the sides are running out of time to reach a deal. The NHL said Thursday that all games through Jan. 14 have been canceled. More than 50 percent of the schedule has been lost, and the rest is now in danger, too. “I don’t want to characterize what today’s cancell...

  • Christmastime

    Special for the Sun-Telegraph|Dec 22, 2012

Christmas is almost here. The lights are beautiful, and as I write this, the ground is covered with snow. It should be a perfect Christmas. Yet, as I look around me, it seems that it is more a “blue” Christmas that a “white” one. The school shooting in Connecticut has brought forth in me sadness, anger and despair. We’re walking in darkness. We are literally in darkness because the night is long. But the darkness of evil the school shooting casts another kind of shadow on us. We look for someone or something to blame. We can never understan...

  • What’s for dinner?

    Jim Hightower, Syndicated Columnist|Dec 22, 2012

As we enjoy the traditional holiday season of food-centered celebrations, let’s not only consume, but also reflect on, discuss and consider, what we can do to shape our food future. We’re presented with two starkly different visions of that future: the industrialized, conglomeratized, globalized, monopolized, plasticized and heavily subsidized vision of Agri- business, and the localized, democratized vision of Agri- culture, in which sustainable farmers and food artisans practicing the art and science of cooperating with Mother Nature, rat...

  • Good girl!

    Peter McKay, Syndicated Columnist|Dec 22, 2012

Regular readers of this column (otherwise known as shut-ins) will know that for years, we had a scruffy, disgruntled West Highland Terrier named Harry. Harry and I did not get along, mostly because Harry loved my wife, and I loved my wife, and both of us wanted to spend time with her. Harry saw it as his mission to get there first, and because he was often faster than I was, he’d be snuggled up with her on the couch or bed when I came in the room, growling at me if I got too close. My wife thought this was hilarious, and spent many evenings c...

Boxes that had been placed in Sonny’s Super Foods store for the past two weeks were picked up today, ending the first of many food drives put on by the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, CAPWN. The food was picked up by Brenda Dickinson and taken to one of the Sidney food pantries. Dickinson said that the food drive over the past two weeks generated a good amount of food for the community. “We collected five good-sized bags of food and are picking up more today (Friday),” Dicki... Full story

  • Still time for fiscal cliff agreement, President Obama says

    Associated Press|Dec 22, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama issued a stern summons to congressional leaders Friday to approve legislation before year’s end to prevent tax increases on millions of middle class Americans and prevent an expiration of long-term unemployment benefits for the jobless. One day after House anti-tax rebels torpedoed Republican legislation because it would raise rates on million-dollar-earners, Obama said he still wants a bill that requires the well-to-do to pay more. “Everybody’s got to give a little bit in a sensible way” to prevent t...

    Dec 22, 2012

These stories from the past first appeared in The Sidney Telegraph. Original writing is preserved, though some stories were shortened for space reasons. 100 YEARS AGO December 21, 1912 ‘Dalton Boy Hurt Jumping Freight’ On last Tuesday several boys were pressed into service to drive teams on grains wagons to the Dalton market. While in town they proceeded to find entertainment, winding upon a freight car sluggishly moving out of the yards. When but a short distance out the boys thought the speed picking up and each lad made a jump. All lan...
