Sidney girls pull away from Gering , 36-28

GERING — Sarah Mahr had a nice warmup, and an even better finish Friday night for the Sidney High School girls basketball team.

Mahr, who scored 10 points in the Lady Raiders’ junior varsity game, one-upped herself in the feature contest, putting up a game-high 15 points as Tyler Shaw’s club improved to 8-2 with a 36-28 win at Gering.

“Sarah really stepped up for us, as we had foul trouble (Jeni Heeren and Morgan Linneman) early,” Shaw said.

Sidney rolled to a 9-2 lead after a quarter, and carried a 17-8 advantage at halftime.

Sidney slowly built a double-digit lead in the third quarter, and then had the advantage trimmed to 29-24 early in the fourth quarter.

With a chance to cut into the lead even more, Gering committed a turnover when Heeren drew a charging foul against the Lady Bulldogs’ Megan Upp.

Mahr was key down the stretch, hitting three free throws and hitting a layup off an inbounds run-out play.

“We had a few chances to extend the lead, but we didn’t,” Shaw said. “The good thing was, we hit eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Mahr scored 15 points, Karissa Segelke 11 for SHS.

Sidney meets McCook this afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Cabela’s Athletic Facility.
