Library ramping up schedule for February

Computers and more

The Sidney Public Library is a busier place than usual this February. Not only is the library hosting art from Panhandle high school students and holding their fourth annual Library Lover’s Month, but the library is also teaming up with Western Nebraska Community College instructors to hold free computer classes at the library.

This is the first year that the library is offering the classes and the classes will be taught by college instructors, according to Doris Jensen, the library’s director.

“It’s a four-hour class but doesn’t count towards college credit. It’s for anybody who wants to learn about computers,” said Jensen.

There will be a beginning computers class held on Feb. 21 starting at 9 a.m. and a basic e-mail class that will start March 14 at 9 a.m.

In the beginning computers class students will become familiar with computers, how to operate the mouse and how to view different programs. In the basic email class students will be introduced to e-mail capabilities, be able to select a provider, set up an account and learn about security and POP access, as well as storage and spam.

For information on the classes or to register for the free classes contact library staff at 308-254-3110.

“We are also putting art on display here from different schools around the area,” said Jensen.

This is the fourth year the library is displaying art and teachers from each school select the pieces to send in.

Creek Valley High School students’ art work will beon display Feb. 11 through 23, Sidney High School students’ work will be displayed March 11 through 23, Potter-Dix High School students’ March 25 through April 6, Leytonstudents’ April 8 through 20 and Peetz High School students’ will have their artwork displayed from April 22 through May 4.

“We’ve had ceramics and sculptures too and we’ve really got some neat things in here. In fact the things we already got from Creek Valley are great; some of them are really talented students,” she said.

The art displays typically occur each year during the spring when students are getting ready to do their fine arts presentations at their schools, said Jensen.

There is also a traveling art show that is circulating pieces throughout the library this month.

The art show is put on by the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs and this year’s works are the result of their 48th annual show. There are more than 16 pieces circulating and they feature some local Cheyenne County artists.

The Friends of the Sidney Public Library group is also celebrating its fourth annual Library Lover’s Month. There are two types of drawings, one for kids and young adults and another for adults, that go on during the month.

“Little kids get to guess the number of pieces of candy that is in a jar. The closest guess the winner gets the candy in the jar and a $5 gift certificate,” she said.

The adults check out a book and then enter their name in their own drawing as well.

The drawings will occur on Mondays for both children and adults. Members of the Friends of the Sidney Public Library group will draw the names and there will be drawings on Feb. 11, 18, 25 and March 4.

Winners of the adult drawings will receive a $25 gift certificate to Western Drug and a 2013 Friends of the Sidney Public Library (FOSPL) membership.

The library is also holding their monthly book sale Feb. 19-23 during regular business hours.

The library will be closed for President’s day Feb. 18.
