Traffic stop leads to meth arrest

David McPhie, 51, was arrested Monday after a Nebraska state trooper discovered methamphetamines in his car during a routine traffic stop.

McPhie was pulled over for speeding on County Highway 19 on the night of August 5. When the trooper approached the vehicle, he smelled marijuana and searched the vehicle based on probable cause. When the trooper asked McPhie if he had anything on his person, McPhie allegedly admitted to possessing a small knife.

The trooper questioned him about this knife. During this process, McPhie reportedly confessed that he used it to cut tags from merchandise that he stole from various stores. He then allegedly admitted that his vehicle contained stolen merchandise from Sidney's Wal-Mart.

When the trooper asked McPhie if there was anything else in the car, McPhie mentioned the presence of drug paraphernalia, according to police documents. Searching the car, the trooper found two GPS units that he suspected to be stolen, as well as a women's baseball cap. The trooper also discovered a black bag containing needles and what he suspected to be methamphetamine.

McPhie was taken to the Cheyenne County Sheriff's office and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony and possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor.
