Sidney Raiders compete at UNK Invite

With more than 20 teams competing from all around state in the University of Nebraska Kearney Invite yesterday, the Sidney Red Raiders girls cross country team finished 11th while the boys were 16th.

Considering the Raiders recent success on both the boys and girls side, Sidney Head Coach Tony Neels was at a loss to explain his teams sub-par performance.

"It was kind of a strange day for us, I can't pinpoint exactly what it was," Neels said.

"Maybe it was the fact that we ran on Thursday and came back to run on Monday. But we've done that before so that shouldn't have been an issue."

In the girls 5K race Madisen Stafford (22:10.87) was the top Raider finisher in 43rd in the field of 184. Alli Ehler (22:24.65), Genessa Schilz (22:50.10) and Mia Hernandez (23:03.14) rounded out the top four.

In the boys run, Sidney's Jachob Wiedeburg (18:38.77) was 51st in the field of 278. Wiedeburg was followed by Hayden Lienemann (19:01.21), Brody McKnight (19:15.89) and Ryan Birner (19:38.87).

"I told the team on the way back that the main thing now is, 'where do we go from here,"' Neels said. "True success comes from failures.

"We have an important part of the season coming up. We know what it's going to take. I believe in this team and all our goals are still very much attainable," Neals concluded.

The Raiders goal from the start of the season was to send both varsity squads to state's. In order to qualify for state's the Raider teams have to finish in the top three at districts on Oct. 17, in Ogallala. Individuals can qualify with a top 15.
