Around Town: Local illustrator, Nebraska storyteller to hold book signing

Ethan Nelson was born to sketch and to paint.

Well, perhaps not literally-though the Dalton native did win a prize in the Nebraska Fence Post Christmas Art Contest in 2002, when Nelson was just five years old.

Meanwhile Charlotte Endorf lives to tell stories from this state's past. Decked in period costume, she often appears before captivated crowds reliving the pioneer days, the travails of those plodding along the Oregon Trail or life in a slumping sod house on the plains.

The two talents came together to produce a book entitled "Bless Your Hearts," a compilation of memories set in and around the famous North Platte canteen operated by the USO during World War Two. Hundreds of thousands of troops bound for Europe or action in the Pacific along the old transcontinental line paused for respite at the Union Pacific standby between 1942 and Japan's surrender.

Endorf related the stories of men and women in uniform, the volunteers, the railroad workers and residents encountering each other through four memorable years in America's history. Nelson sketched the images, drawing inspiration from the tales and images they spin, as much as the sharp pictures of the age.

His illustrations for the book received high honors from the 4-H foundation.

The book will be on display at the Sidney Public Library on Saturday, when its contributors-Endorf and Nelson-will meet with readers and sign copies between 1 p.m and 2 p.m.

Endorf is well known in the area for her readings and appearances. Nelson, now a high school student, continued to expand his portfolio. Last year he was named Cheyenne County Art Guild Artist of the Month in April and earned a "people's choice" award at the Western Nebraska Community College gallery opening. This ear he has picked up a best in show from the county art guild, a nod from the state association of art clubs and more.

Endorf, Nelson, memories of Nebraska's varied past and a Saturday swapping stories ... artist, writer and Sidney's bookish types will be in their element.
